Wait a Minute!
Yes, wait a minute. Just because the party is over, doesn't mean you can go back to your lives. There are contests that need entries, activities that need participants.
"Writing.Com Party Central 2024!" was a roaring success. I mean, how can you not love 7 free merit badges to give out? How can you not love new trinkets, award icons, and all those skins? But just because the founders of our beloved site can sit back and slow down just a little after a week of constant activity, doesn't mean this thing is slowing down one bit.
Several contests and activities started during the Birthday Week and garnered extra publicity because of it. That's great. However, several of the contests are open until the end of September. We can't really expect the owners to shower us with a whole month of goodies ... actually ... wait ... that sounds great now that I mention it. Maybe next year? For the 20th site anniversary?
So, yeah, their week of goodies is over, but the site is still in need of your writing, your reviews, and your participation. Check out the contests and activities that just won't stop. |

I received these replies to my last Contest & Activities Newsletter "Review! Your writing depends on it!"
Beholden wrote: I review as much as I can. For what it's worth, I stand currently at eleventh in the list of most active reviewers. But I review less often as time goes on.
There are two reasons for this. Firstly, it becomes increasingly difficult to find new writers and pieces to review. I don't want to harass writers I like by reviewing their stuff too much so it becomes a search for those I haven't seen before. Obviously, that leaves me with a shrinking field.
Secondly, in my experience there are reviews and reviews. A "proper" review consists of consideration of all aspects of a piece, the originality and imagination that went into it, the quality of the writing and the mechanics of it. That amounts to a considerable commitment of time and energy from a reviewer, especially for a piece that is, to put it bluntly, full of holes. I have to reserve some of my resources for my own writing and it would be exceptional for me to produce one of these per week.
And so I have to fall back on the encouragement review, handed out as brief expressions of enjoyment in pieces that I like. Which is fine except that I don't like everything I read. And, when I don't like something, I have to consider whether I am prepared to put in the effort to attempt assistance towards improvement, whether I can be tactful enough to avoid hurting feelings and whether assistance is genuinely required. Almost without exception, I take the easy way out and move on to the next offering.
You have one of the most level-headed approaches to reviewing ever! Keep doing it the way you're doing it. I agree that some items would require a lot of constructive contributions on the part of the reviewer, and I'm much more likely to spend that time if I know the writer is serious about feedback and polishing the piece afterward. I wouldn't spend inordinate amounts of time on an item I just found by coincidence.
