Contest & Activity Newsletter by Dawn
One of the ways to help around the site is to write. Contests and activities are part of how we build a community and by taking part in them, we help build up the site and each other. |

One of the things I feel certain about is that WDC is not just another web site. It is a community where we have many opportunities to connect and interact. This newsletter is one that covers two areas that provide part of that community set of elements because of the interactions involved. Sure, it's not quite as interactive as the old chat rooms or the quick bits of conversation you might find on the messenger, but the contests and activities are strong elements of where we create this site into a community.
Activities and groups are an obvious form of interaction because in order from them to work, people have to get involved and take part. Whether it's talking about which book you've read this week or posting about a particular genre in a group forum, there are a fair number of places where you can take part in something that holds your interest. Some groups do lose steam, which is the difficult side of running anything on the site. Participation begins to lag and it's hard to keep hosting activities if not enough people take part in the challenge. Still, having a group or being a member is still a good way to take part in the community here on WDC.
Another way that might not seem as obvious for interactions and community is the contests. Entering a contest is in fact a way of taking part in the community. Since we are a writing based site, anything that promotes the activity of writing is a good approach (at least in my book). There are many different options available too. Whether you write poetry, flash fiction, genre specific and a variety of short to longish content, there is a contest you can enter and support. Even if you write really long items, you can break it up into sections and enter those parts into many of the contests here on site. And the interactions come in not just the posting of an entry but also on the judges side when they make decisions and send reviews. Which is why a review is an important part of the process as it's how we interact with each other through the device of the contest.
So, if you're looking for a way to get a little more involved in the site then check out the contests page, search for an activity or two, maybe even join a group. There are lots of options and the only way any of them keep going is through the interactions and activity created by those that take part. Sure writing can be solitary at times but here, it's a part of the community too. |

How do you connect with other people here? Which contest or activity will you support next?
"Words do not express thoughts very well. They always become a little different immediately after they are expressed, a little distorted, a little foolish."
