The world of fantasy has many options for showcasing the right random moment and in our world we do have some crazy things we do, like dedicate a day to french fries, ice cream, or glazed donuts. We can input a little of that kookiness into fantasy worlds when we write in order to give the story a little something more. |

It's a crazy world here sometimes and I'm not even talking about the big items like politics or those pesky earthquakes and hurricanes that have shifted things lately. What I actually mean is the crazy days that we celebrate on Instagram and other social networks. Days like National Ice Cream Day (July 21) or the recent National French Fry day. And I'm pretty sure there are at least 5 different National Doughnut days throughout the year. Though some of us might need to celebrate broccoli and spinach instead of candy but who am I to complain about a made up reason to eat ice cream, especially in July here in LA where it's a bit toasty outside. Still, it got me thinking as things often do and in trying to find a way to incorporate our world into something a little more fantastical.
When it comes to writing a fantasy story, sometimes it just take a little moment, the right bit of description to bring the reader into the different world being presented to them. To draw them in or make it seem more real, a touch of that familiar can help and keeping it to just a brief bit keeps from letting it go too far. Which we can go too far since the genre is known for writers creating stories that are thousands of pages long. But I'm getting distracted. The question here is how can you create that little bit of moment to show the world with a weird, crazy day of celebration.
You could use food as the base. Food is important, for some stories more than others. Does someone in the world of your story spend a day, or longer, celebrating a particular food? Or maybe there is a particular activity that the character needs to promote for a day or weekend? Objects could use a special day in the spotlight too. It could be something particular to the fantasy world or it could be something similar to what we have here in our world. Whatever option you take, just make sure they have a reason to celebrate and a way to do it that is particular to that item. To show different characters you could even have some who celebrate and others who either don't or question what is going on.
Aside from the what a character might celebrate, next there has to be a reason for it. There are many options too for why someone might spend a day celebrating something very specific. No matter what kind of thing is being celebrate, it would help if the character had a particular reason for their approach. It could be a simple matter of tradition. There is the religious element that could dictate ceremony or celebrations. Some corporation might be the reason that causes a promotion of one item in particular over another and that adds to having other reasons for a particular character to celebrate.
So that is your mission this week. Find an item, a food or something different that a character in your fantasy world to celebrate for a day or even a whole weekend. This can be linked to some type of conflict or it can be a situation in passing. Whatever you do with it, that's up to you. Just find a way to develop the character and the fantasy world with a little bit of a celebration.

What kinds of days or things do people in the story celebrate?
Last time, for this newsletter, I discussed the appearances of moms and dads in fantasy stories. Here is a comment sent in reference to that particular topic:

When building a character sheet I didn't pay any attention to the parent page. I just built my character from my perspective. After becoming addicted to TrueCrime podcasts I've seen the importance of detailing the parent's lives and therefore their affect on the child who becomes a criminal/murder. Since then I have filled out the parent's pages. Noting their character and how it affects my character. Sometimes they are included in the story. If they've past on, then a mention them creates more emotion in my main character. Good point in any genre.
