Do you ever have a week where everything that you do – or attempt to do – doesn’t work out and there’s nothing you can do about it? I’m going through one of those weeks.
It all began with my moving furniture up and down stairs, along with hundreds of books, because I was going to get my living room and bedroom walls insulated. My back didn’t like all that moving. My knees protested throughout. Finally, however, everything was stashed away... only for the company to ring me up the evening before they were scheduled to come, telling me that they weren’t going to come after all because they’d confused me with another customer, and they’re not quite certain when they can schedule me in. Great. I’ve been living in a mess since.
As I live far away from a supermarket, I get my heavy shopping delivered. For the past days, the shopping site’s been malfunctioning. I’ve got everything I need in my shopping basket, but as soon as I get to the check-out, the page won’t load. Tried different browsers, different laptops, but computer says no.
The computer also says no to my reserving a spot on my next qualification. It seems straightforward to me – my current qualification ends in September, the next begins in October, so there shouldn’t be a problem. The system, however, believes that I am attempting to study for two qualifications at once. Several phone calls with the university later, during which I was asked if this meant I wanted to drop my current qualification because it appears that what I want to do truly is rocket science, it’s still not been figured out. And the deadline to apply for funding is not that far off...
Speaking of which, the website where I need to apply for funding is malfunctioning. Yep. It’s been malfunctioning since the 17th. They’re not certain when it will be up and running again.
I am, by now, all too familiar with the various dull songs I’m forced to listen to when I am placed on hold. At times, I am rather tempted to bang my head against my still uninsulated walls. First world problems? Perhaps. But I would like to sleep in a bedroom that’s a bit warmer than 10 – 11 degrees Celsius in the winter (50 -52 Fahrenheit). I would like to get my shopping in. I would like for people to understand that I am simply attempting to complete one qualification and then move on to the next. Because, yes, I love to study. Even if that means, as one customer service person asked me, I’m a bit crazy.
Why am I telling you all this when I have a perfectly serviceable blog available to me? Because, as writers, we can draw inspiration from anything. Even those frustrating events that make us want to (metaphorically) pull our hair out. Our characters have to face obstacles all the time. The way that I feel right now can be channelled into the frustration felt by the next character who wanders, unsuspectingly, into my brain.
I am reminded that technology is not as reliable as we’d like to think. We place a lot of faith in it, each and every day. Systems can crash. They do not always apply human logic to a situation. And when the computer says no, it is not always straightforward to get the humans working with that system to say yes.
No doubt you have had your frustrating days, weeks, months and maybe even years. I hope not, for your sake, but sometimes frustration is extremely difficult to avoid. You may not feel like writing about it at the time, and you may want to forget about it afterwards. I wouldn’t blame you. It’s good to move on. But those experiences are there to dip into later, when you put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard. Writing from experience can help bring characters to life.
Something good may yet flow from what, right now, feels negative. You never know. In the meanwhile, may all that is causing you frustration be resolved in a positive way, and soon.
