Hello, everyone. I am ~ Santa Sisco ~ . I'm your guest editor of this Noticing Newbies newsletter.
I aim to ensure you have a smooth transition into the site. I still remember my first day here. "Bitem?" Do I have to be a computer programmer to put my writing on here? Forty-eight hours later, I realized it was a case of easy when you know how!. My biggest mistake when I joined was that I didn't take the time to read the "Writing.Com 101" . I was excited and wanted to do everything on the same day. Sound familiar?

I advise all newbies to read this quick-start guide by The StoryMistress first. "Get Started With Your Account"
1. First, you should set up your portfolio and biography. "Video: Set Up Your Portfolio Tabs"
The first text box on your portfolio page is for you to write about anything you want a visitor to know when visiting your port. This text can be about you, your work or anything you feel is relevant.
Your biography page is a little more in-depth information about you. When I visit someone’s port, the first place I look is their bio. I want to know if you are M/F, what country you reside in, (This helps with knowing when you might be online.) a concise “About Me” section will allow me to get to know you better, and other listings will let me see if we have anything in common.
If you prefer a visual explanation, see the video at "Biography Tab" from "Writing.Com 101" .
2. You should upload some of your work to get it noticed and to get feedback. After all, getting feedback and help with our writing is why most of us are here. If you are not sure how to upload your writing yet, I recommend you read these: "Invalid Item" "Create/Edit a Static Item" and "How To Upload Writing"
3. Next, you will need to know how to link an item from your portfolio so you can share it or enter a contest. There is plenty of help on linking items and I have highlighted a few of my favorites here: "Video: Linking to an Item" "Bitems, Items & User tags" "Invalid Item" and "Newbie Hyperlinking 101 - Bitem Format" .
4. Once you have some work posted in your portfolio, and you know how to link to it, why not post an entry into a contest? We have many contests to cater for most tastes and genres. Current contests are advertised on the "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com" and an in-depth list of contests can be found here "Contest Central Station" . I also run a contest for newbies who have been members for six months or less. "Invalid Item"
5. Now, if you haven’t already, start to make some friends on here. This community is the best for writers I have ever encountered. Forums are an excellent place to start, and I advise all new members to introduce themselves in the "Noticing Newbies" forum. If you still have trouble finding people to socialise with, contact me or any of the Mods, and we’ll point you in the right direction. |
