The Sixth Ranger
How to add an extra, important character into an existing team.
In my last Action/Adventure newsletter "The Five-Man Band" , I described the members of the Five-Man-Band.
Those are:
The Leader: the boss
The Lancer: the boss's right hand man
The Smart Guy: the one who has expansive knowledge on many things
The Big Guy: the one who fixes things by breaking them
The Heart: the team member who keeps the team together
The Five-Man-Band benefits from yet one another member. The Sixth Ranger.
Who is the Sixth Ranger and what do they do?
The Sixth Ranger is your way to provide your team of heroes with all the stuff that they can't carry or all the knowledge that they don't have. Once the Sixth Ranger has been added to the team, they can be present or not in any of the adventures as needed.
The Sixth Ranger will usually be an older, more experienced character. He or she will be someone who has powers that go beyond those needed immediately in the field. That power could be political or logistical. The Sixth Ranger will offer resources and advice when the Five-Man-Band needs it. That help could consist of getting a warrant, provide a helicopter, international travel visas, technology support, etc.
Sometimes, the Sixth Ranger will be there right from the beginning. In other stories, the Sixth Ranger will show up after a while. He or she might even appear to be a villain at first, only to be revealed to be a helpful and supporting character after all.
The Sixth Ranger can also be a traitor. As a new team member, they have insight into the team and can attack it from within. Since the original Five-Man-Band will overcome this obstacle, writing the Sixth Ranger as a traitor is also a good way to make sure the original Five-Man-Band is returned to its original state once the adventure is concluded.

Please do. And don't forget the Sixth Ranger. Will they be helpful or traitorous? |
