In honor of St. Patrick's day, and befitting a horror/scary newsletter, I would like to present to you, Murphy's Law. Think of all the fodder for a scary story you can get with this truism!

Origins: Murphy's Law ("If anything can go wrong, it will") was born at Edwards Air Force Base in 1949 at North Base.It was named after Capt. Edward A. Murphy, an engineer working on Air Force Project MX981, to see how much sudden deceleration a person can stand in a crash.
One day, after finding that all the transducers were wired wrong, he said, "If there is any way to do it wrong, he'll find it." And so the Murphy's laws were born.

Even before Murphy's laws were born, people noticed that things always seemed to go wrong in any situation. Older names for this phenomenon were Finagle's law or Sod's law.

Here are some examples of Murphy's Laws:

Anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time.

A slice of buttered bread, when dropped, will always land butter-side down.

The day you forget your umbrella, it pours with rain.

When caught in a traffic jam, the lane that you are in will always be the slowest to move.

Nothing is as easy as it looks.

Everything takes longer than you think.

If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong.

If something simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway.

If you perceive that there are four possible ways in which a procedure can go wrong, and circumvent these, then a fifth way, unprepared for, will promptly develop.

Left to themselves, things tend to go from bad to worse.

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

I am sure most of you could think of other Murphy's Laws. The most creative/scary/funny one sent to this newsletter, as judged by me, will receive a merit badge of my choice.

schipperke's Reader Feedback

** Image ID #947799 Unavailable ** essence of thought Author Icon:You have a special style in writing with a nice humorous touch. Your steps are convincing, thanks for this newsletter.
Thank you very much.*Blush*

** Image ID #947799 Unavailable ** Justice Author Icon:Thanks for a great newsletter. I constantly struggle with keeping my writing pace up, particularly when my current project (my first novel) loses some steam and that little quickie short seems so promising. An hour a day definately keeps the procrasticnasties away.
When the sun is shining it is HARD to sit down and write. Small steps seem to work best.

** Image ID #947799 Unavailable ** zwisis:WOW! Positive thoughts, Schip. You've got me motivated!
And YOU motivate me to write a BETTER newsletter!

For years I have been telling aspiring authors the same thing: You need to read, read, read review, review, reviw and EDIT if you want to improve your work in any genre.
You pointed this out so well in this week's Newsletter. Thank you!
Sometimes the editing is more fun than the original. And I would always rather be reading!

What a great newsletter! Loved the line about your mother being the only one to see your work priceless!
Aww, shucks.

Don't forget to send me a unique Murphy's Law for a merit badge! Of course, it being Murphy's Law, your computer will probably crash after you upload it...or you'll slip on the floor and hit your head and forget what you were going to send me!
