Letter from the editor

I’ve hardly written anything this year. Last year I took part in loads of contests and events. It was great. I had a good amount of stories, an entire poetry collection, and I made regular entries in my blog. This year I’ve written a story and a couple of not-very-good poems. That’s it.

It’s the way it goes sometimes, I suppose, but it doesn’t feel right. Sure, there are reasons for why I have been less productive. I’m busy with my Master’s degree. There have been health issues in my family. I haven’t felt that great myself as a consequence. I’ve also broken a few bones. All that didn’t exactly inspire me to be creative. Still, I’m a writer and because of that I miss writing.

I’m ready for a new adventure. Are you? Have you got stories that you haven’t yet managed to put on paper? Are there characters bouncing up and down in your mind who yearn for you to tell their tales? Are there lines and phrases and pretty rhymes dancing around your brain? If so, it’s time for us to dust ourselves off and pick up our quills/keyboards.

The year isn’t over. We don’t need to look back at it with regret. We’ve got time; now we just need the determination to get back into the writing zone.

I don’t know about you, but I find that writing for contests is helpful. It isn’t all about winning for me. I don’t exactly mind winning, of course, but it’s mostly about the inspiration and the fun of taking part.

Some of my best items were originally written for contests and activities. The story in my portfolio that I like the most was written for an official site contest, with a photo prompt as the inspiration. The thing about prompts is that you can interpret them in such a wide variety of ways. You can go down an obvious route, or you can completely make it your own. My mind can wander down some truly unusual paths, which I like and my readers seem to like it, too.

If, like me, you are a student, you may find creative writing a pleasant break from academic writing. I personally am less than fond of having to use academic language and set formats. I have to use them for my essays – there is no escape from that – but I’d much rather use my own style. It tends to flow better. Oddly enough, when I’m in full flow with my creative writing I tend to find writing my essays slightly easier, perhaps because my mind is already busy linking together lines and phrases. It could well be that writing is similar to working out – the more you do it, the better you get and the easier it becomes, no matter the format.

My advice, then, is to seek out some prompts. Have fun with them. See what happens. You may wish to enter a contest, or you may wish to keep the resulting item to yourself. It doesn’t matter. At least you’ll have written something new.

Entering contests is enjoyable, though, and once you’ve overcome any worries you might have about how you compare to other contestants, you’ll likely find yourself looking around for something else to enter, and something else yet again. Win or lose, you’re flexing those writing muscles and you can end up with pieces that will take pride of place in your portfolio.

Don’t hesitate to enter the monthly official site contests. They have good prompts and you never know, you may end up winning big – the prize packages are very generous indeed. You’ll also receive feedback on your item from the three judges, which is always helpful.

So, what’s your next adventure? Let me know! *Smile*

Good luck!
