Letter from the editor

At Writing.Com we celebrate two birthdays each year *Cake**Cake3*(cakes)

One is the day that’s generally beyond your control; the day you took your first breath in an environment chosen for you. This day you may choose to share with your peers or keep hidden from the Community via your account settings.

The other birthday we celebrate is the one you have chosen the day you clicked on http://writing.com and decided to grab a portfolio, open it and write. *Pencil* This day you cannot hide, neither date nor age, as it’s on the cover of your briefcase. Go ahead, once you’ve stayed to read a bit more here, click on your email and once it populates point your finger (hover) on the portfolio of someone who sent you an email. Below their name and status, you will see the following, for example, “Est. December 28, 2005.” Look below, in our featured links, for a couple of folks you can test this on, and while you’re hovering, stop by their portfolios and with them a Happy Birthday *Thumbsup*

This birthday, also known as Account Anniversary, you cannot conceal; and the date will be celebrated every year, as long as you keep your portfolio. *partyhat*

My first day as a Newbie on a chill December’s evening, though I had yet to create an item or even a bio, I was welcomed and asked to share my work. Further, although nobody knew me, a number of writers asked me to read, and review, their writing.

That’s what makes our Writing.Com Community unique, I believe. Regardless of our writing experience, age, gender, whether published or emerging writer, or any other myriad of possible markers, we are each welcomed as a peer, a fellow writer.

On your first WdC birthday, by all counting methods, you are officially no longer a Newbie. Some contests and activities use 3 months; others 6; none I know of longer than a year. However, there are always new challenges, new activities, new groups, new writers, each birthday new stuff for your writer’s toolbox. (Check out Writing.Com 101) So, by extension, no matter the number of years, you’re never really old at Writing.Com - another reason it’s a cool place *Cool*

Welcome and
Write On *Pencil*
