Ok. We were going to find obscure monsters to bring some fresh blood, so to speak, to our horror/scary writing. After surfing the net for several hours, I realized there were a lot of books written on the subject but not much on line to actually print out (without violating someone else’s work) for our use.
Not to be daunted in the quest, I decided to list some of the urls and books I found instead. I tested all of the links I came across to be certain I wasn’t leading anyone on a wild chase and a number of them were good. Sad to say, some of the best links just would not connect when I typed the address.
Here are some that did seem to work.

The last one is an exchange between elementary aged children. From what I can understand, a class in one school develops monsters and sends their ideas to another class in another school. The receiving class develops their set of monsters and returns the ideas to the first class.
Out of the mouths of babes. I’ve written a number of scary stories from ideas my grandchildren gave me, so it might be a good place to check out.
As for books, I found a scattering through Amazon.com as well as through links on search engines. I haven’t read any of them, but a couple look pretty good.
“Monsters of North American” one by William Wise, one by the same title from Edward Baumann
“Gruesome Guide to World Monsters” by Henrick Drescher and Judy Sierra
“Monster From The Swamp” by C.J. Taylor
“Monsters” John Greer
“Monsters, Evil Beings, Mythical Beasts and All Manner of Imaginary Terrors” by David Gilmore
“Giants, Monsters, and Dragons: An Encyclopedia” by Carol Rose
“A Field Guide to Demons, Fairies, Fallen Angels and Other Subversive Spirits” by Carol Mack
“Heroes and Heroines, Monsters and Magic, Native American Legends and Folk Tales” by Joseph Bruchac
I haven’t read this book by Bruchac, but I did order it immediately because I have read other books he’s written, and he’s very good with the Native American aspect.
That's what I have on monsters. For the next Newsletter I will throw out some monsters I have either read about or heard about from Native Elders. If you have any particular monsters from your culture, drop me an e-mail and I will include them with an acknowledgement to you for the lead.
