Long Distance Love

The concept of a long-distance relationship has always intrigued me. Relationships are difficult under the best of circumstances and adding distance between the couple logically would seem to put strain on the relationship. Communication is key in keeping any relationship healthy and while distance does make this harder, with the technology available today, it's certainly not impossible.

I search the Internet to find statistics on long-distance relationships and stumbled onto a site with a wealth of information, http://www.longdistancerelationships.com. The following statistics are taken from this site:

                   Long Distance Relationship Statistics

How often do they visit one another?
                   Average: 1.5 times a month
95% range: once a week to once every four months

How often do they call one another?
                   Average: once every 2.7 days
95% range: at least once a day to once a month

How often do they write one another (not including email)?
                   Average: three letters a month
95% range: never to every other day

There are many other statistics on the site, but since my focus was communication in a long-distance relationship, these were appropriate. These statistics support my conclusion that communication is a key factor in the success of long-distance relationships. The site doesn't mention email, but I think it's fair to assume that the couples email each other on average at least as often as they write a letter.

Taking this information into account, I thought it would be interesting to see if I could write a romance story around a long-distance relationship. The interaction between the characters would be different, giving a new twist to what might otherwise by a traditional love story. I challenge each of you to write your own romance about two characters in a long-distance relationship. If you write one, send me the link and I'll feature your story in my next edition of the Romance/Love Newsletter.

Until Next Time,
