About This Newsletter

Spring is definitely warming up where we live. April showers bring May flowers. My DASH diet is great. I've lost 5 pounds in 4 weeks, but there's more work to be done! May is National BBQ month. Who doesn't love a good BBQ? My favorites include hamburger, ribs, and steak. What do you LOVE to BBQ?

It's also Mother's Day this month. How do you spend your Mother's Day? Do you take your mom out to breakfast? Treat her to movie? Cards? Chocolate? Flowers? I'd love to hear how you show your mom appreciation.

Last month I talked about Alpha Males and how they portrayed as romantic heroes. I believe I mentioned that alpha males were "traditional" heroes in the romantic drama. Well, I read something recently that me question that thinking. Big thanks to (Stik) for bringing this article to my attention: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/mar/08/women-are-having-different-fantasi...

#MeToo and #times up are here. How does the romance change to portray their romantic heroes. Does it change? The article points out that in the 1970's the archetypal romance hero was alpha. He was controlling, forceful and demanding. Women didn't understand his reasons for doing things, but accepted them. Is that the same climate today? Would readers today embrace "50 Shades of Grey" like they did 6 years ago?

Heroes have been rich men, "bad boy" princes, or men brought into the heroine's sphere of influence by scandal. But is society looking away from these types of heroes? Let's take a look at another type of hero in romance writing - the beta hero.

Letter from the editor

A beta hero is different from an alpha hero, but how? If a alpha is dominant, a beta is not. If an alpha kicks "butt," a beta does not. A beta is generally not the "leader" but the guy next door. He's the firefighter or police man. He's heroic, but gives his "heroine" space.

Beta heroes are gentler, kinder than alphas. They're more laid back and prefer to make their partners laugh. They want to do things with their partners not do something for her. Quite honestly, the beta hero is the nice guy. He puts others desires before his.

Beta Guys
Remember Jack from "While you were sleeping?" He's a beta hero. Reece from the 1984 movie, "Terminator" is a beta hero. Kurt Weller from "Blindspot" is more of a beta hero.

Do you have a favorite beta hero? Would you consider "Luke Skywalker" to be a beta hero? Han Solo? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

As I read this bit on male alpha heroes, I found myself thinking of the above article:

How much longer will traditional alpha males be traditional in romance novels?
Will they change according to readers' tastes in the midst of the recent social
upheaval? And will these changes lead to what I'd like to see more of: alpha
female (heroes)?

A pic of me taken 2 years ago.
