Cannibalism

Humans eating other humans is has been a source of fascination for hundreds of years.

Explorers and missionaries often reported to have come across tribes who practiced cannibalism. Historians don't agree with all accounts, especially since wars and colonization were started with the argument that the uncivilized cannibals had to be converted.
Not all accounts of humans eating humans are fiction and there are some relatively recent, well-documented events of this.

In writing, cannibalism fits best into the horror/scary genre because it's not something that is accepted as normal behavior. There is always an element of something "not right" with cannibalism. This makes it a good all-purpose tool in horror/scary writing since it can cover so many plot types. Rituals, war, murder, famine, pandemic ...

Nearly any horror story gets cranked up a notch by the addition of cannibalism. But don't overdo it.
