Darkness
The longest night, the shortest day.
December 21st is Winter Solstice. This means we're living through the longest night and the shortest day. After December 21st, the days become longer again, things are looking up, spring is only three months away.
But until then, there are plenty of days when it's dark by the time you clock out from your nine to five. What better season to write some dark and gloomy stories and books. Think of books like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I couldn't tell you if the whole book happened in darkness, but it's clear that Dr. Jekyll turns into the scary Mr. Hyde after dark. When I read the book, I remember distinctly the constant feeling of being in the dark streets of old London. The shadows and the lack of light added to the feeling of gloom and fear.
Just as Robert Louis Stevenson hired darkness to play a role in his novel, you can do too. Aside from good characters and a solid plot, you can really enhance your reader's experience by using the time of day and how much natural light there is to help create the atmosphere. You can make your readers feel things without having to show or tell by tapping into the collective feeling that makes us huddle around a fire in the cold. Or turn on all the lights when we come home. Or seek out company to make it through a long night. Use darkness to capture that feeling and unleash it onto your readers.
And just in case that five o'clock darkness isn't scary enough for you, you can always make a rule not to feed the pets after midnight! =
