Contests

"Hello Mrs. Editor. I'm new here and I want people to read my stuff. How can I make that happen?"

This must be one of the most common questions received in the feedback to this newsletter.

In my view, one of the best ways to achieve more notice in the community is by participating in the numerous site contests. Covering anything from poetry to novels, there is a contest to suit any taste.

"Well...what's entering a contest going to do for me? I don't get paid or published -- do I?"

Well no - there's no folding or jingling stuff to fill your wallet with, nor are there generally any publishing rewards. But there are many benefits to submitting to contests. These include:

*Bullet* Spark your creativity. Many contests provide prompts which can fire up your imagination.

*Bullet* Achieve a higher profile within Writing.com. The more places your name appears, the more likely it is you will receive a random visit. Some people will specifically target contest entries to read - either to check out the competition or because it is a good way to find things to read.

*Bullet* Earn Gift Points. If you win or place in the contest, Gift points (or even merit badges, awardicons, signatures, sponsorship, and upgrades) may be won as prizes. Some contests even offer gift points just for entering.

*Bullet* Receive more reviews. Not all judges have the time to review every single entry to their contest, but many will. Just entering a contest can attract more reviews from interested parties or random readers.

*Bullet* Challenge Maybe you enjoy the thrill of competition. If so, entering to compete aginst other writers has its own reward. However, it can also provide you with a creative challenge. Choose a genre, style or type of writing that expands your experience and stretches your ability. Perhaps romantic poetry is your normal forte, so why not enter a children's short story contest? You could find you don't like that type of writing, and that's fine, but you also might find a whole new world of options opens up before you.

"Okay, I'm starting to be interested in these contests...but how do I find them?"

As a good place to start I suggest going to your Item Jumps drop-down menu, and click on Contest Listings. Scroll through the list and take a closer look at any which sound interesting.

That is not a complete list of contests on the site. If you want to see more, then use the Search facility, setting the Any Genre option to 'contest'. Enter a keyword of a type of contest you might be interested in. For example "poetry" or "short story". To further narrow the search results down choose 'Forums' from the Any Type box.

There is a specific weekly newsletter dedicated to contests and activities on Writing.com. CHRISTMAS cub-BELLS R RINGING! Author IconMail Icon discussed the various newsletters available last week. *Wink* In case you missed that, here's a brief instruction on managing your newsletter subscriptions:
1. Go to your My Account
2. Click on Manage Newsletter Subscriptions
3. Check the box beside each newsletter you want.
4. Click on Submit Changes and you;re done.

Uh, ok. There's quite a lot of contests here isn't there?"

*giggles* Yes!

But I don't have any room left in my free account to put new items I might write just for these contests. I don't want to delete my existing things, so what can I do?"

Well the obvious answer might be to 'upgrade' your account. However many contests now make provision for people with limited portfolio space, allowing the item to be posted directly to the contest forum. Check the rules before doing so, and if it is not specified, ask in the forum or send an email to the contest host.

I hope that has given some incentive to try a contest or two. Check below for a couple of contests to check out. *Wink*

Thanks for reading.
