Hello, everyone. I am ~ Santa Sisco ~ . I'm one of the four permanent editors of the Noticing Newbies newsletter.
My aim is to ensure you have a smooth transition into the site. I still remember my first day here. "Bitem?" Do I have to be a computer programmer to put my writing on here? Forty-eight hours later, I realized it was a case of easy when you know how!. My biggest mistake when I joined was that I didn't take the time to read the "Writing.Com 101" . I was excited and wanted to do everything the same day. Sound familiar?
You will see my contributions every four weeks, and I hope they help you with using this great site.
My fellow permanent editors are Tornado Dodger and Sara♥Jean .

What is editing?
Editing is to check your writing for mistakes and to make it the best work you can accomplish. You can condense your writing or make any other changes you want to improve your text. As the editor of your work, you control the content just like an editor of any publication. We edit to make our words clear and to check the sentences accurately convey the message we intend.
What should we edit?
Everything we write can be edited. If you are new to writing, I would suggest you start with your emails. When you have written an email, click on the "Preview Email" button. It is easy on WDC to get an emoticon or anything else wrong when typing. A quick check of your email before you send it will spare any blushes and show you as a serious writer. (Don’t worry, we all make mistakes in emails if we write enough of them in a day.) It is a good habit to start now if you don’t already.
Anything you post in your portfolio can be edited. You are showing everyone your published work and want it to be your best. When you post a new item, I suggest you set the reviews to email replies only until you have some feedback via reviews; this will help to stop you getting low ratings for your draft while reviews are still helping you edit your work. Any positive suggestions can be acted upon with an edit of your work. When you are happy with your item and believe it is the best you can achieve, then change the review settings to allow reviews and ratings. (Or any other review preference you have.)
If it’s written or typed, it can be edited.
Away from basic editing, you should be aware there is another consideration when editing. Your mind plays tricks on you! Really? Yes! When we read, or brain looks at patterns in writing and makes assumptions about what words to expect. If the first and last letters of a word are correct, we will read them using the brain's expectations. Don’t believe me?
“I cdnuolt blveiee you tghuhot I was srmat enoguh to fool you.”
Good editors read sentences back to front. Our brains are used to our eyes moving left to the right, so moving them right to the left takes away the auto-read function.
Tools:
Depending on the word processor you are using, you will have some spelling and grammar checkers included; don’t forget to use them! There are free grammar checkers available or, for a fee, you can get the premium features. I am not going to endorse any as it depends on your preferences. Search the Net and try some out.
Remember the most important three words in writing: Edit, edit, edit!
