Color Your World

In keeping with my current trend on newsletters, I'm going to do another newsletter on a national day. August 2nd is National Coloring Book Day. We all fondly remember coloring as a child. I do, I even remember the cookie tin that held all of the crayon nubs. We used every inch of those crayons. A few (quite a few) years later and now there are "adult" coloring books. I was a little nervous about what I'd find in an adult coloring book but much to my relief, there were very beautiful drawings inside to color. Some are mandala drawings with very intricate parts to color.

I certainly admire the people that create these pages. While I could probably come up with one idea for a pretty page, making an entire book of drawings certainly requires a lot of patience. Like with any intricate hobby, you have to love what you do. Like the members here at WDC, we don't get paid to write our stories, we don't get cash back for reviews, we do them because we love to do them and it makes us feel good.

I admit, I have one and I really do like to sit down once in a while and color on one of the pages. I don't have many pages done but while I am coloring, I'm blissfully calm and not really thinking about anything more important than what color to choose next. Like many other things we do: watch movies, read books, write, garden...our hobbies help us relax and forget the things that stress us out. So on this very important occasion, if you're not able to color a beautiful coloring page, take the time to do something you find relaxing and enjoyable. We all deserve a little down time.

Oh, and August 3rd is "National Grab Some Nuts" day...I'll leave you to interpret that any way you like! *Laugh*

This month's question: Do you like adult coloring books? Why or why not?

We are firm believers that far too many writers dwell so much on the grammatical portion of their writing, they stop the creative juices from spilling out of their fingers. A good writer does not stop to correct mistakes along the way. A good writer WRITES until they have extracted every bit of juice from their creative selves. Only then, does a good writer stop to edit.

Keeping that in mind, this daily contest will get your creative mind to write, write, write! How? You won't have TIME to correct. :) The judging will be based on how well you followed the prompt and how creative you were with it, not just on how well you write.

Excerpt: After he had agreed to the bet, he regretted it. Yeah, the girl was strange, she was wired, a loner, and probably had issues at home, but she didn't deserve this. Finally, after a month, he decided he was going to break up with her. Most guys wouldn’t date the strangest girl in school. She was abnormal and once he said those words, "I'm breaking up with you," he wondered how she would react.

Excerpt: Fighting against December's blustering wind, Miakoda unlocked her front door and pushed it open. The wind caught a bright blue envelope, lofting it high. That's odd. Mia watched as it fluttered to the ground and then snatched it up. Someone must have wedged this under the door. Puzzled and a bit wary, Miakoda tore it open, oblivious to the accumulation of snow on her hardwood floors.

Excerpt: he other day I'm at my son's school fun day. I'm doing the rounds, checking out the stalls. I particularly like the Bottle Tombola. I've had a fair amount of success with this over the years. Anything ending with a five or a zero is yours. I buy five tickets. I reach into a cardboard box filled with raffle tickets and rummage around for a bit, but I don't choose tickets indiscriminately. First I study the stall.
