Letter from the editor

Is There Anybody Out There?

Sometimes on a website filled with thousands of people, we can still feel alone. This is where people are.

We are in the age of socializing online.

One of the complaints that I have often heard is that people do not socialize with one another anymore. That they do not put their phones down and just talk to each other.

I believe the opposite is actually true. There is far more socializing going on than ever before. What is different between socializing now and socializing in the past is that we, quite literally, have nearly instant access to the people we want to socialize with on a constant basis. So it is not that people aren't socializing, they just aren't socializing with the people sitting across from them - they are choosing to not socialize with those people, and instead choose to socialize with someone else. The unique and very cool part about it is that they could be socializing with someone who is also sitting beside them, who is in another city, another room, another country, or in a complete other part of the world. Instantly. But, honesty, it doesn't make it any less rude.

I digress, I want to talk about the ways that we can socialize with one another here! On WdC! That is, of course, the most important of all.

I believe most everyone is already aware of the first socialization tool I'd like to comment on, but I want to point out the neato-ness of our Scroll feature. Like snapchat, your comments do not stay long. At least, not as long as other people are also contributing to the conversation - it'll all scroll off soon enough. There are also cool games that pop up in scroll that give you the opportunity to earn some free, no strings attached GPs. You can find a link to Scroll in your left sidebar by pressing the button labeled "Messenger".

People are also very much in the Newsfeed. This is like the... WdC version of Facebook or MySpace. You post things there, people comment or post an emoji reply, it's brilliant!

Speaking of Facebook, Writing.Com has a facebook page. People are also there. You can find that at this link - please check it out! https://www.facebook.com/writingcom/

People are also in their blogs. (Well, that is a bit of an exaggeration. They aren't in their blogs. That would either be incredibly difficult for them, or incredibly painful for the computers.) You can find the recent blog postings here: https://www.writing.com/main/handler/item_id/1878897-The-Blog-Board

People are also in their groups, they have created in-and-outs to talk with their friends... writers are very creative individuals. That is one of the things that is so wonderful about them!

My point is, the people are everywhere. It can be a bit overwhelming at first, but introduce yourself one place at a time, and then branch out some more once you become more comfortable whith the environment.

In "Noticing Newbies Newsletter (June 14, 2017)Open in new Window., Sum1's Home! Author Icon said, "At [redacted] you feel old? Wow! I didn't start feeling old until I hit [redacted], and that was 8 yrs ago. I still keep my TV low, more for background noise than anything. I rarely watch much on TV, my focus is on the laptop, and what I'm doing there. What I need to do, is re-learn how to relax. Let things go for a bit, and just sit back and relax. It's a work in progress. *Smile*"

Shhhhh, don't go telling how old or young we are! You might make everyone jealous! *Bigsmile*

Where is your favorite place to "hang" out with people on WdC? How did you find out it existed?
