Introduction
As the newest Fantasy Newsletter editor, I figure I should just start with an introduction. Hi, I'm John.
I was born in 1974 and have been an avid reader of scifi/fantasy all my life. My favorite childhood cartoon was Dungeons & Dragons (which I have on DVD here at work!). My favorite authors include Orson Scott Card, Robert Heinlein, and Raymond E. Feist.
Some think fantasy is easy to write, because you don't have to stick to real-world rules. I disagree; you must invent an entire system of rules for any new world you write in. This makes fantasy writing harder than mere fiction, yet that's where the extra fun lies. You get to play God to a world. Try to make everything work long enough, and I daresay you'll be a wiser person for it.
Fanfiction lovers should peek at my "Invalid Item" . One sorely missing is probably the Tolkien fanfiction index. I don't have the time to update one (or list the gazillion LOTR fanfics from here), but if anyone would like to organize one, feel free to shamelessly copy my format! All the real work is setting it up - maintenance isn't much after that.
Anyway, next week I'll either discuss starting a story without dumping on your reader, or I'll skip that and launch straight into world-building. Stay tuned... |
