Music

I don't know about the rest of you, but music is pretty central to my writing and daily life. I listen to it in the car, while I work, to relax, to energize me, etc. It's pretty much always there, in the background at the very least!

I remember a WDC contest that I found very inspiring. I believe it was called "CDs into Stories," where you took any album and used the track titles as chapter titles in a story/book. I've used that method several times, even once for NaNoWriMo! The interesting thing was that it was a local band and they were quite intrigued in the idea!

For me, music works really well in the background. I'm one of those types of people that have a few projects going on at once. If I'm doing just one thing, I have a difficult time focusing. Having music (or sometimes television) in the background can help me focus for some reason. I can't work if it's too quiet!

During NaNoWriMo in particular, I used movie soundtracks as background music. (Sometimes I had horror movies playing. I don't actually watch horror movies, as I can get too afraid to watch the screen, so having the movie on made me want to look elsewhere, like at my laptop screen! It helped me focus on my writing!) *Laugh*

While I was in school, I preferred Beethoven and classical music. Lyrics and words tended to distract me then. That could be why soundtracks work well while I'm writing now. Soundtracks help set the tone and pace in a film, and it makes sense that it might help while you're writing a particular scene, too!

How do you use music while you write?

Ask & Answer

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (December 21, 2016)Open in new Window.), discussed celebrating holidays.

My favorite part of any holiday is remembering what they truly mean and the family together. As a Christian I don't celebrate many big holidays. Easter & Christmas, of course. And holidays like Veterans and Memorial Day...but they are quite days for me. Even Easter & Christmas aren't as big as they used to be. For me they're quite contemplation and remembrance of why we really celebrate them. It's what inspires my poetry and some of my stories. Happy holidays everyone. ~ Elfin Dragon-finally published Author Icon

And Happy Holidays to you, too! I hope you had a lovely Christmas*Smile*
