Where To From Here?
It would be tempting to title this issue "New Year's Resolutions". But, quite apart from the fact that I don't actually believe in making them, I want to focus more on having a goal and progressing toward it.
You may wonder why I don't believe in making New Year's Resolutions, which after all, is apparently a world-wide tradition. Simply, most people never have any intention of keeping them, which is very sad. If you want to make a change, why wait till the new year? Make the resolution and start acting upon it...anything else is just procrastination.
That said, I do want to talk about goals, and Newbies to this site are in a perfect place to examine their wishes and goals, whether you are here as a writer or reader.
The beginning of a new year is a good time, if that timing is accompanied by a desire to actively achieve the goal. For myself, I have written little over the last three months, out of necessity. I knitted 7 scarves, scrapbooked three complete photo albums and 1 mini album as Christmas gifts. Additionally, I fulfilled orders for over 250 handmade Christmas gift cards -- believe me, it took all of my time, energy and resources to do so. With Christmas behind us, I am looking forward to resuming my writing career and regaining my drive. So Newbie or not, this newsletter applies to anyone who finds themself in need of a little life-prioritising.
There are so many areas you could look at, depending on how important writing and reading is as part of your overall life goals.
Here are some ideas:
Read, rate and review X items per day/week/month
Find out one new thing about the site every day/week/etc.
Write something new every day.
Complete a first (or second) edit on a specific item of writing.
Buy one or two new book resources, or join courses, to refine your craft (this could include a reader's book club or writer's circle, for example).
Set up a schedule for the sending of submissions to publishers.
These are just a few ideas, mostly borne from my own experiences and some of my desires for this year.
Just remember:
Identify the end goal.
Set several smaller stages to achieve so you feel the psychological benefits of making progress.
Be realistic
Write down your goals and post them up somewhere...beside the computer, as a screensaver, in your diary...
Be flexible, but persistent allow time for family and friends, and make sure they know what you want to be doing. Recognise time-wasting activities/distractions, but also when you need a break to refresh and re-inspire.
And most of all, I send you, Newbies and 'Oldies' alike, my warmest wishes for a very...
Thanks for reading.

Featured Question
When does "Newbieism cease? I've been here for about a month, maybe two.
wrdz2liveby
A good question, and it kind of depends in what way you mean it. Here's a few tips:
- To be featured in the Noticing Newbies Newsletter, it is 31 days or less.
- For other purposes - eg. appearing in Newbie listings around the site, it is 60 days.
- Other Newbie specialties such as forums and contests will depend on the rules of the host. Always check the rules/conditions to see if you qualify. I have seen some contests run for Newbies who have been members as long as six months.
I hope that helps. Let me know if I can be any further assistance.
Awesome newsletter!
Keep up the good work.

As a newbie, there is so much information that at times my head just spins. I am grateful for a site that I can come to that will be an outlet for me. I received a 2.0 on my first piece ever writen. That is good I think. Thanks again for this site.

It can be a somewhat daunting process. I hope you experience it as an enjoyable challenge to find all this site can offer you. The StoryMaster and The StoryMistress certainly have created a full and exciting platform for readers and writers alike!

Yes, I agree! This is a very exciting network. I too, am trying to learn the many things available. Mostly, I enjoy all the letters I recieve. Being up here in Alaska, I find it intriguing to be able to talk to people from all around the world. As i always say...keep writing on!

Wow, in Alaska! The tremendous thing about the internet is how small it can make the world. Being in New Zealand, I too, appreciate the communication abilities...but especially amongst the special kindred writers' souls here at Writing.com.
PS. if you put a piece of writing in your port, even a brief bio, you will attract more visitors.

What fun! This newsletter on scrolling was just what the doctor ordered. In the last several weeks, I had started scrolling but wasn't sure exactly how it worked. I have won some points (which is always helpful), but with your help I was able to sponsor my first hangman-type game. They are as much fun to create as they are to play.
Thanks a bunch!
