Letter from the editor

I still haven't read the Harry Potter books and my movie experience is limited to the first two, which one of them I didn't like one of the creatures, the way it was depicted. However, for Thanksgiving, one of the things we did was go see Mystical Beasts and Where to Find Them. My sister loves pretty much all things related to Harry Potter, so it was her idea and she knows far more about the world but even I could appreciate the movie without having that knowledge.

As a writer, one of the things I appreciated within the movie (aside from the obvious awesome creatures that the title suggests) had to be the world building. All of the world from the historical real world where magic is added in specific ways to the inside of the suitcase.

Don't worry, I won't give any details but oh my word, that suitcase. All I can say in case you haven't seen the movie but if you do, you will appreciate what the writer and the ones who made the cinematic rendition came up with for the worlds involved.

I don't venture much with real world fantasy, let alone bringing in the historical elements, though it's on my list of potential projects some day. But I liked how the magic is incorporated within the people's lives and could appreciate the roles it played as I am a fan of magic in stories, being that I love using it in my own ones.

Then there are the creatures. Many newsletters could be written on the creatures but I'll save that as I know others who edit these newsletters have been doing creature specific ones so there are many out there for you all to check out when considering fantastic beasts in your own creations.

To summarize, one thing we can do as writers is appreciate the worlds, stories, creatures, and more done by others. It can be in book form or even when we go to the movies. Even if we're not always familiar with the sources or entire series, there are many things to be appreciated. And that was the case for me when I saw the well done movie: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Now to maybe seek out some books.

Ask & Answer

What do you think about the world Rowling created in the recent release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them?

Last time, I discussed the numbers involved in writing since it was November and NaNoWriMo. Here are a couple of responses sent in:

Comment by Elfin Dragon-finally published Author Icon
Though I'm not using numbers as an important issue in my current novel...in another novel I'll pick up later, the number three is very significant. It's used in ceremonies, legends and a variety of other things. And for NaNo? I still need to write more than 40,000 words. ugh

Comment by Quick-Quill Author Icon
I'm behind. Not so much in words but in the numbers. I am not always at my computer so I write in a notebook. I have to transfer the words so they can be counted. UGH!
