We all have times when we struggle in life. Those struggles can be made up of brief moments or of days, weeks, months.... even years. When that happens, it is easy to feel that we are weak. That we cannot possibly make it through. Every day brings another battle, and you can feel tired, drained, worn down, sick of yet another obstacle just when you’d tackled the last one. If you are going through a time like that right now, I first of all want to say that I am sorry that you are dealing with that. Secondly, I’d like to tell you that you are stronger than you think you are.
It may sound like a cliché, I know. One of those things people tell you when they don’t know what else to say, or that they feel they ought to say. Fact of the matter is, it’s true. You’re still here, you’re still going, you have made it through everything life has thrown at you since the moment you are born. You are strong. You can do this. Just remember that you are not alone.
I have been through some dark times in my life, and have experienced all those thoughts and feelings that I mentioned above. I have felt helpless. I have had times when I wanted to curl up in a ball, throw my duvet over me and hide from the world for the foreseeable future. I felt very weak, but I wasn’t. I made it through, and things got better, enabling me to write this newsletter and tell you that you are at least as strong as I am, and quite possibly even stronger.
I should have reached out, though, when I was stuck in those dark times. It’s all too easy to feel like you don’t want to burden anyone. That nobody will want to hear about your problems. That nobody will understand. But you’d be surprised at how many people do want to help, do want to listen, and even if they may not have been in the exact same circumstances you are in, pretty much everyone understands what it is like to go through bad times, and all the emotions and feelings that come with that. And if you need professional assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out and seek it – that’s what the services are there for.
It is not bad to need help. There is no shame in needing help. It doesn’t mean that you are weak – reaching out means you are strong enough to do the right thing for yourself.
If people care about you, they will want you to talk with them. Care isn’t just for when times are good and fun and light. If it is, what is that worth? True care is there, always, no matter what, and it isn’t a one-way thing. Just as you want to be there for others, they will want to be there for you, too.
Of course, this being a spiritual newsletter, I will also recommend prayer. No matter what you believe in, prayer, meditation, finding and using that spiritual connection can help you boost your strength and offer comfort. If you have that connection it can help you feel like you are never alone, no matter what you have to face – you have good on your side.
Despite the benefits of this connection, I still recommend reaching out to those people around you who love you, care about you, want you to be well. You can never have too much love and support in your life and each person brings their own skills, their own traits, their own knowledge – things that may be of benefit to you, just as your skills and traits and knowledge may be of benefit to them.
Don’t suffer in silence. Sometimes, even heroes need a helping hand.
