Letter from the editor

If you take a look at the newsfeed, you will see that many authors are currently engaged in a battle with time, offline responsibilities and, quite possibly, themselves. Yep, it’s NaNo time. What that means is that, generally speaking, the site is otherwise pretty quiet, as serious novel writing is going on.

That does not mean that there aren’t any challenges going on, however. If you are not a NaNo participant, or if you are a NaNo participant who needs a break from your characters, do visit the contests page over at "Writing Contests @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. [E] and the activities page over at "Activities @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. [E]. It is also always a good idea to check for contests and activities on your newsfeed, as people are likely to plug their current challenges on there. Any host always looks forward to a good amount of participants, so you will not just be doing yourself a favour by trying something different, you will be making them happy, too. It’s a win-win situation (and you might just win some nice prizes).

Speaking of spreading some happiness, it’s always good to check out the official site contest. The participation rate hasn’t been great, and that’s a real shame considering the prizes up for grabs. The current contest, which you can find here: "Journey Through Genres: Official ContestOpen in new Window. [E] invites you to write a story in the Children’s or Young Adult genre. That’s a great prompt for Action/Adventure writers – you will be able to take younger readers on an amazing adventure and if your story is good enough you might well walk away with a big pile of gift points!

What about December? Fairy lights, Christmas trees, everyone’s going to be spending time with family and friends and nursing their full bellies... So what action can you expect on this site?

How about a trip down under? After the success of the European backpacking trip, plans are afoot for a month in Australia over at the "30-Day Blogging Challenge ON HIATUSOpen in new Window. [13+]. These blogging journeys are always a lot of fun and a real opportunity to get creative and get to know other authors. I have personally made some great new friends during the August round.

Many of the regular contests will still be open, such as "Daily Flash Fiction ChallengeOpen in new Window. [13+], "The Writer's CrampOpen in new Window. [13+], "SCREAMS!!!Open in new Window. [GC], "Write from the Heart Poetry ContestOpen in new Window. [E] and "The Dialogue 500Open in new Window. [18+].

Or if you want to embark on a longer adventure, why not sign up for "Give It 100!Open in new Window. [13+], or "I Write in December-January-FebruaryOpen in new Window. [E]. For adventures with a touch of romance, you could also sign up for "I Write Romantic in WinterOpen in new Window. [18+]. There are special badges and trinkets for those who succeed!

You can round off the year by nominating your favourite November or December Action/Adventure piece here: "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window. .

And the 2016 Quills year is nearly at an end, so make sure you nominate your favourite pieces for one of those prestigious awards! The nominations form will guide you through the process: "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window. . And check the current list of nominees to see what’s already been nominated in each category: "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window. . You never know... you may already be on it!

Whatever writing journey you embark on, I wish you the best of luck. And to all you brave NaNoWriMo people out there, you can do it!
