Jumping In

Overcoming that feeling of being "new."

What can newbies do on Writing.Com?

In a nutshell: Newbies can do anything and everything all members can do on Writing.Com. It is true though that the site is so vast and has so much going on, that it is easy to get lost here. Also, being new means you are likely to get a couple of things wrong and what you attempted didn't work out.

Don't worry about it. Every single person here started out just like you. They found the site and it looked like something to try out. To some, the site is like a second home from the first few keystrokes. For others, it takes months to figure out how to do some pretty basic things.

No matter where you fit on that spectrum, you are here in a place where most members are happy and willing to walk you through just about any problem. For starters, there is "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window. for help with most topics.

But how do you take the explanations from "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window. and turn them into static items, forums, contests, activities, etc.? One way to go about it is to carefully follow all the steps as they are explained in the book. For contests you would like to set up etc, check out the existing contest pages from other members. Take a few minutes to look over those. Is everything clear and logic to you? Do you feel that you could enter that contest and know all the rules? Or do you think the rules are confusing and there is missing information? That is good for you because now you have an idea what you have to put on a similar contest or activity page you want to run.

If you joined Writing.Com in 2016 and started an activity or contest for the whole community, reply to this newsletter through the text box below and I will feature your item in my Noticing Newbies NL in November.

Ask & Answer

In response to my last newsletter "Safer WritingOpen in new Window., I received the following replies:

GaelicQueen Author Icon wrote: This is an excellent reminder for all writers. You put so much time and effort into a document you must be vigilant in making sure it is saved in more than one place for safe keeping and retrieval.

I couldn't agree more. I once lost eight pages to a computer crash. It took me over 4 weeks to re-write them. And I don't think I've ever been able to recapture the lost pages completely.
