Superstition is to religion what astrology is to astronomy the mad daughter of a wise mother. These daughters have too long dominated the earth.
~ Voltaire
Ah, yes, superstition: it would appear to be cowardice in face of the supernatural.

Yes, that number has been overdone when it comes to the horror and superstitious kind, but it never seems to bore anyone. There's always some new aspect of it, a new angle we can work with when it comes to that number. It never gets old! Yet, it's not the only thing we base our superstitious writing on. Ever seen the movie Number 23? It may not have been exactly a horror movie but definitely a psychological thriller confusing the mind of the sane person.
When writing, do you ever base any of it on an old wives tale? Perhaps you've had some of your own gruesome experiences with them?
Shaye has an entire list of random superstitions from all around the world in her blog "Invalid Item" and the entry "Invalid Entry" but here are some of the ones that don't contradict itself due to living in a different country:
Broken mirror seven years of bad luck
Picking up a stray penny brings you good luck.
A four leaf clover brings good luck.
A dog howling at night means someone is going to die.
A black cat crossing your path is bad luck.
Nose itches, you'll be mad.
If the bottom of your foot itches, you'll be traveling.
You can take any of these, twist them however you wish and create a story which will scare the crap of someone else. Horror isn't just a genre to scare, but to dig deeper in the crevices of the human mind. You dig and dig until you find that secret darkness within, the kind no one gets to see or hear about. Using any type of superstition, it may help you find the deeper truth about the unimaginable which gives one goose bumps and makes things go bump in the dark.
'Til next time!
