Romantic or Steamy Romance
Where is the line between romantic and adult writing?
Some like it hot, some like it tame.
Writing.Com has a few genres that lend themselves to romantic writing. The most obvious genre is the Romance/Love genre. Many times, Romance/Love writing will be paired with the Erotica and even Adult genres.
When you run a search on the site for Romance/Love stories to read or Romance/Love writing activities to take part in, you will find many groups and writing pieces that not only encourage your writing to focus on matters of the heart and emotions, but also the physical attractions.
It is then up to you to figure out just how hot you want to write.
There is the more flowery pure romance where two people spend their time penning poems to each other and just gazing into each others eyes with hardly any touching of each others bodies and a simple hand holding becomes an event of major importance. The writing of these stories would concentrate on describing emotions and facial expressions of adoration.
There is the mature (adult) romance of two people who know each other well. Their romance might be based in more practical things such as figuring out how to navigate day to day life, raising a family, supporting each others career choices, and having a physical relationship that would be hinted at in the narration, but probably not elaborated on in every little detail.
On the opposite spectrum of gazing in the eyes is the steamy romance of two people who spend the time in their story pretty much figuring out ways and places to be as physical as possible with each other. Their stories will include a lot of details about body parts and where they are in relation to each other. There will be a lot of descriptions of sights, sounds, and other sensory details.
In my editor's picks, I included some stories as well as writing groups and contests that challenge you to explore the different levels of romantic writing. Check them out, participate, write some, read some, review some.
