Well, it's been a dark and awful week here in the States, so I really struggled over what to write about for this week's Drama Newsletter. But I think The StoryMaster reminded us all of how lucky we are to have this safe haven, this wonderful community known as Writing.com in his "Note: Today is surely one of those days in the real wor...". And while we can't hide from the atrocities of the world around us indefinitely, even though we would love to do such a thing, WDC is certainly a welcome respite, a much needed oasis of calm and escape, of camaraderie, if even for a few moments, a few hours in the middle of a horrible or horrifying day or week.
It got me to thinking about hope, and the things that give us hope. I will be honest, I tend to be more of a cynic than I would like, but I will also admit that my faith in humanity is always restored when interacting with the wonderful members of our writing community. They're kind, they're generous, they're knowledgeable ~ but never stingy with their knowledge ~ and they're always willing and eager to lend a helping hand, a word of support, a laugh when you need it most, a kind thought, and a willing ear to listen.
We are indeed very lucky to have such a place, because they're becoming increasingly rare in a world filled with anger, hatred and distrust of our fellow human beings.
So, thank you, SM!
In the broader picture, and when it comes to your writing, finding hope can be a difficult thing. If you have a character wading through the muck and mire of life, that glimmer can be evasive. But sometimes it will come to you when you least expect it. Is it a person, a new (or old) character that's been hovering on the periphery? It could be. Perhaps it's a thing, a talisman of sorts; a quilt sewn by a grandmother, a letter penned by a father, an heirloom passed from mother to daughter. Maybe it's a place, historical (in the literal sense, or maybe just to your character) or sacred. Maybe it's an action, like getting in a car and driving, or walking down a street that has meaning or carries weight in your character's life. It could be a word or a phrase or an experience, a memory.
In the end, humans are creatures of connection; we connect our lives, who we are, to the physical world, in people, places and things, but we also connect ourselves to the ethereal, the spiritual ~ that little bit of something that lives just beyond who we are ~ in memories, experiences, perhaps a word or a phrase spoken in life, but just as easily in a dream.
All of these things can be an avenue of hope; that glimmer, that shining thing in the darkness, lending your character a lifeline they may not have had before. |
