The Love of a Pet

\

Seven weeks ago, my boyfriend and I turned our little family into a family of three when we adopted a cat named Mimi. Mimi was about a year and a half old, small and delicate, with a gray coat and green eyes that implored us from inside the cage to take her home with us. Although we met three cats one-on-one, Mimi had already stolen our hearts and got to come home with us.

An hour later, we let our little bundle of joy out of the cardboard carrier from the shelter, and she immediately flew behind the stove and did not come out once in close to five hours. We tried luring her out with treats, and eventually she was out walking around. The first 48 hours were kind of rough for all of us; there were sleepless nights and potty accidents. Eventually, however, we all warmed up to each other. Now, we can't imagine life without our little girl.

I was prepared for early morning feedings and cleaning up after her. The one thing I never expected, however, was how much of an impact getting a cat together would have on our relationship. For the first time, I was seeing my boyfriend in a "father" role, and I didn't always agree with the decisions he made regarding kitty care. He thought I had purchased too many toys for her and that I was "spoiling her" with toys and food. I had read up on cat behaviors and could justify providing more stimulation and feeding options. He didn't want Mimi in the bed with us at night; I was cool with it as long as she didn't wake us up. Having a cat caused plenty of conflict between us at first, and it still does sometimes. It has brought out a lot of my sensitivity; I worry about her jumping out the window and running away, and he thinks I'm basically crazy. But it also has brought us close together in some ways.

I never imagined how much our lives would change after getting a pet together. We both share our love with another individual now. She may be furry, but she she provides us with love and warmth at night, protection from stink bugs (and once a bat!), and funny moments that we will remember forever.
