The first thing I noticed when I became a member of Writing.Com is that this site is big. I huddled in my portfolio, tentatively placed an item in there, sat back and waited. What if people disliked my work? What if they ripped it to bits? What if they thought that I was an absolutely dreadful author? It was a daunting first step, and all I could manage in those early days. My real adventure had yet to begin...
It is easy to linger in your portfolio. Wait for reviews. Maybe offer some feedback to other authors. If you limit yourself to that, though, you are not getting the best out of the site. There is a whole writing world out there, filled with lovely people, stuffed with inspiration, laden with exciting opportunities. If you dare enter it, it will push your limits as an author. That is a good thing.
The first thing I recommend is that if you spot an author whose work you enjoy, fan them. They might return the favour. If you do so with several authors, all of a sudden you have an active Newsfeed. People post all sorts of things on their Newsfeed. Contests, activities, sometimes even Newsfeed-only fun. Before you know it, you will no longer feel isolated. You will be making new friends. And you will get yourself into all sorts of enjoyable challenges.
You can also join groups. There is a wide variety of groups out there to suit different genres and writing activities. Do you enjoy sending reviews, or want to improve your technique? Join a reviewing group! Many of these groups offer rewards for your efforts. Do you like writing in a specific genre and explore it further? Look for a group with likeminded authors. You can find them under “Browse By Type ---> Groups”
If you look at the Community link, you will spot the Contest option and the Activities option. Once I dared to peek around, I entered a contest, and it was a lot of fun being inspired by the prompt and awaiting the results. I didn't win that time, but hey, I had a new item for my portfolio and that was a reward in itself. There are plenty of sources of inspiration to be found under those links, so have a browse around and see if anything strikes you.
Another good way of inacting with the community is by starting a blog. You can write about anything and everything in your blog. I do. And if you want to be read and read other bloggers, there are different challenges, offering daily prompts.
Do you like long-term challenges? Have a look at "Give It 100!" [13+]. You get to choose your own challenge, but you will have to stick to it. If you do, you can earn good rewards and a special Merit Badge. If you don't, you can try again, but you'll have to start back at the very beginning.
There are events held throughout the year that will drag you into the site in a way that you can't even imagine. This summer, for example, keep an eye on Creeper Of The Realm She will be hosting her annual Game of Thrones event. I haven't played it yet, but I have heard a lot about it and will be giving it a go this time around. The site owners, too, hold a special celebration in September, in honour of Writing.Com's birthday. That is always a good time to get involved.
If you feel very adventurous, why not host your own contest or activity? Offering inspiration will help you connect with other people, and the process is very enjoyable. If you want advice on how to go about it, have a look at the Newsletter achive, and specifically the Contests & Activities newsletters.
You can chat with people, too. If you are a paying member, you can click on the Messenger link and it will bring up the IM console (or scroll, as its users call it). You even even win some gift points there – scroll throws up the occasional mini game.
So, don't linger in your portfolio, waiting for someone to notice you. Explore. There are always people willing to explain things to you, have a laugh with you and support you. As said, though, it's a big site. You have to go out there. And as always, you get out of it what you put in. More, even, if you're willing to have an adventure.
