Surfing on Scroll

"Scroll" or "Scrollies" is a term you may have come across, and wondered exactly what people were talking about, or whether there was some cute, fluffy mascot running around within the website's walls.

If you have not found scroll yet, let me introduce it to you,a dn some of the functions you can find there.

First, it is accessed through your Member Tools drop down menu. And it's not called scroll there, but IM Console.

Go ahead, click it now. It will load a separate window so you can click between this newsletter and the console if you like. *Wink*

There are a couple of parts to the console.

The top has a list of members that are online and available, as well as date/time, a sponsored item link and more. If you wish to send an Instant Message to someone, look for their name on the list and click the (IM) after their name. Names are in alphabetical order and listed under their case colour for ease of navigation. If no (IM) is present after someone's name, that person has chosen to be unavailable for messages at present.

** Image ID #1041761 Unavailable **

The top row gives you options to see a log of sent and received IMs, to load a blank email, or your Notepad. The final one - [Refresh] - will update the listing to give you an up-to-the-minute list.

The bottom part of the console is where the term 'scroll' comes from as it is a series of messages that scroll as they are entered. It's a bit like mini chat, if you like, but there are some fun extras available in Writing.com's scroll.

** Image ID #1041763 Unavailable **

As you can see, it is headed "Scrolling".

The [?] provides some useful information and rules about using scroll. Please abide by these. Every member is able to see the messages, but only Upgraded+ members can make posts.

After [?] comes [G] [P] [T] [#] and [Refresh]

[Refresh] will update scroll. Sometimes scroll will lag with the automatic updates, but a manual update is only a click away. *Smile*

Now to the fun bits. The four letters/symbols in between are all related to scroll 'Robot' games that a member can sponsor on Scroll.

[G] creates a game, the one that loaded for me today was a "Guess my number" game. A sponsor creates a game and assigns how many Gift Popints they wish to give, then people in scroll try and guess the right answer.

[P] creates a word game of the Hangman type, only with no victim. *Wink* The games lasts until someone hasd correctly answered the phrase set by the sponsor.

[T] creates a trivia question game.

[#] is a listing of people's rank in the scroll games.

Click on each of these to check them out and see exactly what each offers.

The very bottom of the Console is where any Upgraded+ member types a message to appear in scroll, along with the ability to change colour of your messages.

As with most things, the IM Console is customisable.

Under your "My Account" page is a link to "Change Preferences".

Here, you can set your session availability, your Instant Message Availability, and the Scrolling Messages section. Play around with the options and change them when you need uninterrupted time.

Scroll is another great way to hang out with your friends on Writing.com, communicate with members, find help, ask questions or earn Gift Points in the games, or share out some GPs by sponsoring a game.

Happy scrolling!

I hope it's ok to say that I really enjoyed the newsletter but the story was even better. Thanks for welcoming us newbies. I am in my 4th and exciting month and I am still learning so much about this site. Thanks for the help.

Jaoli~ miss you all, bye ;( Author Icon

You're very welcome. *Flower2*

What does IM mean? I know I should not be breathing in this millenium not knowing that computer term, but I don't. And I agree, there is much to learn about this maze of a site, which I believe more and more (but immediately) will prove itself worth being so. Thankyou.

No worries, I'm sorry that I'm guilty of 'tech-speak'. *Blush* IM = Instant Message. See the editorial above for more information. I am sure that this site will quickly become a second home as it has for so many of us here. *Smile*

Plenty of support! *Heart* I'm thrilled you found the newsletter inviting.

Oh, Pudidat, I simply loved the fictitious beginning to your newsletter! It grabbed me right away, like an arm, pulling me right in! What a great attention-getter! And the rest of the newsletter was excellent also. I especially liked what you said about each person being an individual, unique. We all have our own set of needs, that's for sure. Bravo to you, my friend! (((APPLAUSE))) *Bigsmile*
