It's the new year, 2016, and time for new goals, resolutions and all other kinds of things that one can come up with to start. That could even mean, a new story of any length. Since resting in December after the chaos of November, you might be ready to start a new novel, or to read through the draft worked on for NaNoWriMo. Or, it could be time to test out a new genre with a short story or novelette. Then there is the resolution to finally write a novella or flash fiction story. Either way, there are many times when one can write something new and that could be in January. However, how do you know when it is time to start a new story.
I don't have the exact answer because that will vary depending on the writer. However, I do have some tips and things for you to consider if you are considering starting something new.
1. Do you want to write a fantasy (sci-fi, speculative fiction) story?
Good. This is the fantasy newsletter after all, so we'll try and focus a little on the specific genre though I like to include sci-fi and call things speculative fiction to help encompass the many subgenres available. It helps to want to write though sometimes we have to follow through on the habit in order to get things accomplished.
2. How many projects do you have unfinished?
Don't worry if you have several ongoing as that doesn't immediately mean no for starting a new one. It's just something to consider when pondering the potential of starting something new because you don't want to get in the habit of starting but never finishing stories. I've done that far too many times and know from experience that it helps to finish projects.
3. Why do you want to start a new story?
Have you been in a bit of a writing slump? Do you have a great new idea that is itching to get down on the page? There are many reasons behind wanting to start something new that can vary from no reason at all, contest you want to enter, to making a new year's resolution. No right answer here. Think about it if you have that urge to start a new story because it can be interesting to see your reasoning behind things, even story creation.
And for more general advice: there aren't that many questions you need to ask. It's all up to you whether or not you start that new story. I just suggest to on occasion finish something too. Like me: I'm not starting a new story as I'm still working on my novel from November. However, if a contest prompt strikes my attention and I have done my daily novel writing, then maybe I can add something new in January too.
Make sure to check out some contests available here on WDC. They might inspire a great new story. |

Is it time to start a new story? Or would that keep you from finishing one?
Last month for the fantasy newsletter I discussed colds, illness and how it might affect someone's abilities in fantasy stories. No responses were sent through the system. December was a busy month for people. Now it's a new year and hopefully some great chances to talk about fantasy and science fiction.
