Little Steps

As I pen this column, there are two days remaining in 2015. I'm on the road heading to Pennsylvania to visit family. Sitting in the navigator's seat, I have some time to contemplate my path through the coming year. You know the drill--we do the same thing every year. I resolve to ... lose weight, stop smoking, write or read more, or just become more active on Writing.Com.

No matter what we decide to do or not to do, the act of deliberation is a positive thing. It not only allows us to move forward, but it encourages us as well. Even little steps eventually take is where we want to go.

BUT! Before you look ahead, pause to look back. Consider your accomplishment s during the past year. Use them as a springboard to determine your way in 2016. Perhaps your successes will inspire you to try something different.

Your first step in defining your 2016 goals is to write them down. Post them some place you can see them each day. Set a date by which you hope to accomplish that goal. Identify the individual steps needed to accomplish your goal ... and then complete them one step at a time until you that goal is met.

Find someone to whom you can be accountable while pursuing your goals. But, be serious about achieving success. Nothing's worse than asking someone to help you and then resenting them later when they try to exercise that accountability.

Consider entering the "Dear Me: Official WDC ContestOpen in new Window.. It will not only codify your goals but may even earn you cash money in the bargain. Writing.Com awards a total of $175.00 to the top three places in this first official contest of the year. Remember, only paid members may participate.

I hope you all have a blessed coming year, and I wish you the very best of luck in all your writing endeavors.

Ask & Answer

And from the mailbox about my last Noticing Newbies newsletter, "What is Writing.ComOpen in new Window..

From Alexis Kaye Wright Author Icon: Where would I post asking people if they know of old-fashioned publishing companies that pay the author to publish their book instead of charging the author like most do today? It isn't really a technical problem that is why I am not sure where to ask. :)

You might try a couple of places. One is the "Writing.Com General DiscussionOpen in new Window. forum. Another is any novel group that specializes in the genre that your novel is about. I hope this helps.
