About This Newsletter

A new year, a new start? Possibly. But change does not have to happen on a set date. It can happen at any time.

This week's Spiritual Newsletter is all about the future, and what we want to make of it.

Letter from the editor

We are in a time when many people think about the future. A new year. A new start. A line has been drawn to say that a cycle in our lives is over, and for better or worse, we are about to enter another one.

Whether or not we need those cycles is down to the individual. For some, the only noticeable changes might be the natural changes of the seasons. Others, who have had a good year, might be determined to make the next one even better. Amongst the people perhaps most eager to jump over the line are those who need a fresh start, because the past year has brought a lot of unhappiness. There is hope that the future is kind, a happier place to be, a land of opportunity.

A lot of this is, of course, imagined. There is the change of seasons, mentioned above, but Spring does not begin until March, and Winter begun earlier this month. At least on my side of the planet – elsewhere, it is different. We do get a bit older each year. This may be a good thing, or less good. It may be the year when the acne finally clears, or the knees begin to creak when you get up from your chair. But the drawn line is a mental one, associated with a date on a calendar invented by humankind.

Nature does not care about that date – I am currently surrounded by flooded areas, and more rain is expected to fall. The clouds will not check the clock when the hand moves to midnight on New Year's Eve. The ill won't find themselves magically cured. The depressed and the grieving won't find sudden relief.

War won't end. Politics will proceed according to plans already established. What, then, does change? Perhaps a personal attitude. Intentions put into action. Some, so inclined, might only last a month. A few, however, might find in themselves the strength and determination to make genuine, lasting changes. That is nothing to be sneered at.

I have no New Year's resultions this year. A lot of what is happening in my life right now is out of my hands. What changes I need to make, I need to make regardless of the time of year. What plans I have are to do with different cycles. For example, I need to decide whether or not I want to do a Master's degree, and where, as I am slowly coming to the end of my undergraduate studies. Which I do need to work harder at, as my grades this year are not what I would like them to be.

There can be a benefit to looking at the future and make a list. To gather one's thought, and consider one's expectations, and whether or not they are realistically achievable. A certain amount of satisfaction can be gained from crossing things off – you have done it, you have succeeded – or, if you aren't like me and don't have a tendency to lose your list soon after making it, you can look back a year from now and feel contended at a job well done, or reevaluate your plans.

Ultimately, it is down to you. You will know what is helpful, what makes life easier. Just remember that a fresh start in life can take place at any time. Whether it's in March, or June, September or December, or simply one day, at 15:31 when you feel fed up at what is and know you can do better, go for it. It's always worth a shot.

As for me, right now, I am hopeful that my favourite singer has decided a reunion or new music is worth a shot. It's taken many years to get there, but the signs are hopeful. I would welcome official news, as it would be a good way to enter 2016.

It may happen. Whatever happens, though, I wish you a happy new year. Let us hope that it does bring us health, and happiness, and everything we wish for. Including Axl back on stage with Slash and Duff and any of the old band who are available and willing.
