Every English poet should master the rules of grammar before he attempts to bend or break them.
Robert Graves (1895 - 1985)
All slang is metaphor, and all metaphor is poetry.
G.K. Chesterton (1874 - 1936)

NaNoWriMo for Poets 2.0
A few years ago I talked about participating in NaNoWriMo poetry-style. Today I’d like to show a few ways to participate in a November writing month challenge—some poetry and others not. Explore and consider which way you’d like to spend your November writing.
Traditional NaNo
With traditional NaNoWriMo, writers sign up here: http://nanowrimo.org/. The goal is to write 50,000 words during the month of November and, if you do, then you “win.” There is also a version for the younger writer that has a lower word count. More info can be found here: http://ywp.nanowrimo.org/
MUST HAVES
--Write at least 50,000 words of a new novel during November. Nothing before. You ARE allowed to write out an outline, character sheets, and other prep before November begins.
--Don't forget to share your progress here: http://www.writing.com/main/authors/action/nano
PiBoIdMo
This is Picture Book Idea Month for those who write picture books. With this challenge, you are tasked with coming up with at least one idea for a picture book each day in November. For more information or to sign up, click here: http://taralazar.com/2015/10/25/piboidmo-2015-registration-is-open/
MUST HAVES
--Come up with at least 30 ideas for picture books during the month of November.
November PAD Chapbook Challenge aka NaPoChapMo
A few years ago Robert Lee Brewer, a blogger for Writer’s Digest, presented a poetry version which was called November PAD Chapbook Challenge. This was a kind of National Poetry Chapbook Month version for November for poets not planning on doing NaNoWriMo. Poets were challenged to create a poem a day with the thoughts of creating a chapbook with the best poems written that month. I haven’t seen any mention of this going on this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t just go ahead and do this yourself. If you need some inspiration, Robert does have prompts on his Writer’s Digest blog: http://www.writersdigest.com/editor-blogs/poetic-asides
Feel free to follow the challenge as presented then or check out my suggestions for possible variations on this below.
MUST HAVES then
--Write at least 30 poems during November. This is with the idea of writing one poem a day.
COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS? Variations on a November PAD Chapbook Challenge
--Go traditional as mentioned above or…
--Write 50,000 words of poetry and combine NaNoWriMo and the chapbook challenge.
--Combine all three and write 50,000 words of either poetry or poetry ideas.
