There is no charm equal to the tenderness of the heart.
--Jane Austen.
I'd like to think that one of the reasons we enjoy a good romance is that we like to read a story about hope and overcoming conflict. But what attracts us to the romance books we read? The Title? The Cover? The Blurb?
What catches our eye first? I thought I'd explore how romantic titles suck us in and dare us to read them.

Why did you pick up that romance story? Was it the title? Did it intrigue you?
Coming up with a title for your story is never easy. The main ingredient: Your title should never be dull. After all, what entices you more to read: "Gone with the Wind" or "The Plantation?"
A title should be easy to remember and appropriate to your story. "Romeo and Juliet" is a good example. It's easy and puts the main characters front and center.
Everyone knows "Pretty Woman." Julia Roberts is a hooker with a heart of gold. The title is easy to remember and describes Roberts' character, Vivian, inside and out – she truly is a pretty woman. The challenge (or conflict) is finding a way out of her predicament.
The best titles reflect the tone of the story and are found in the context of the writing. The more clear and clever the title, the better.
A story title represents your work to the rest of the world so pick well and show off your interesting side.
Let's take a poll.

My first date? Chris roared into our driveway on his gigantic black Harley, and my mom nearly had a heart attack. I hopped on the motorcycle and asked Chris where we were going. He didn't answer me, just blasted out away from the safety of my home. I was excited and scared. After a 20 minute ride, he pulled off the road and we walked, hand in hand, to the top of an impressively steep hill. I wasn't sure what Chris wanted from me. Turns out, he just wanted to show me the vista below us. To this day, I have a thing for Harleys. I saw him again, about ten years later. He was quite famous and still gorgeous. Wish I'd married him.
What's romantic for me? Being with a guy who pays attention to me and makes me laugh. I like to be touched (casually, in public). I'm not high maintenance, but I won't appreciate dinner from McDonalds. Please don't bring me flowers; I don't want to be responsible for their death.
Oh, thanks for highlighting my story!
Thanks so much for sharing. I bet that vista had a remarkable view! I have much the same expectations in that regard, I like a guy who makes me laugh and pays attention to me. That's important.
Quick-Quill
While first dates or simple dates seem romantic its not about the setting its who you are with. Look at The Bachelor(ette) where TV sets up romantic settings but is it to the couples? This only works when the author has set up a couple who when put into this setting react to it believably. Enhance the feeling with the setting.
That's a great example. The settings are romantic, but without the spark between the couple, the expectation is artificial.
