Tolkien had an epic with Lord of the Rings. It's a journey to beat evil with an unlikely company. But this isn't the only story that takes place in Middle Earth.
If Bilbo had not saved the ring during his voyage in the Hobbit, the stage would not have been set for Frodo to take his turn to get rid of the ring.
Part of the history of every story can be its own tale to unwrap. Who doesn't love an epic? Stand alone stories are wonderful in their own way, but readers can appreciate the world in many more ways when the only experience is a single book.
These long pieces take us through many characters and lifetimes. A few of them try to tackle time itself and wrinkle the fabric as the characters create change.
Are all of these stories worth writing books about? Are they worth taking the time to explore the little nooks and crannies outside the main plot line? Only the writer can drag them out (unless you're big enough to spawn fanfiction - but this is not the newsletter for that).
