Using Old Sayings

I love old sayings and phrases, don't you? Some of them are so obscure, they make absolutely no sense. Those are my favorites. One in particular is, "I'm gonna beat the living daylights out of ya!" Of course that got me to thinking, what are 'living daylights'? Which inspired this story, "The Living DaylightsOpen in new Window..

But there are so many out there you hear everyday and think nothing about. To me, they are the best writing prompts.

I found a website full of them called http://www.wiseoldsayings.com

There's nothing you can't find here. Do you recognize some of these . . . .

*Pencil* There's no place like home.
Made me write, "Home Sweet HomeOpen in new Window.
*Pencil*Everybody makes mistakes.
This inspired the story, "MistakenOpen in new Window.
*Pencil*Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
I love this one, it prompted this story, "Ode To MelanieOpen in new Window.
*Pencil*Climbing the stairway to heaven.
Inspired, "Stairway To HellOpen in new Window.
*Pencil*The pen is mightier than the sword.
Inspired, "Mightier Than The PenOpen in new Window.
*Pencil*He has his mother's eyes.
Inspired, "His Mother's EyesOpen in new Window.
*Pencil*There was a shadow of guilt.
I had to write, "A Shadow of GuiltOpen in new Window.
*Pencil*Give me the keys to your heart.
Inspired this Valentines story, "The Key to Your HeartOpen in new Window.
*Pencil*Let me give you something to remember me by.
Inspired "Something To Remember Me ByOpen in new Window.

I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea here. Old quotes, sayings, wives tales, and figures of speech are out there to explore and inspire.

Until next time,

DEAD LETTERS

Specter Author Icon
Explains about his poltergeist:
W.D.,
Thank you for featuring my story ‘Give Up the Ghost’ in the Horror/Scary Newsletter. My undisclosed hope was for it to be politely disturbing. The trendy thing to write is still in the misty retreat of contemplation. Now I’ll go and watch the dining room chairs dance on one leg, while the roof thumps out its chorus.
*Pencil*No prob, good story, good writer, and it's about ghosts.*Smile*

Bill,
Great article and tips on how to improve a character and make them more appealing to readers. I liked the examples of Patrick Bateman and Severus Snape for villains a reader could empathize with. Keep up the excellent newsletters! *Delight*
