Accepting Our Differences

There's a light tap on the decorated door of my portfolio that is my bio block.

         tap...tap...tap

"Hello, welcome to Writing.com!"

"T-t-thank you," the child responds, with large green eyes.

She looks excited but a little afraid, too. I draw her into my home, and hang a garland of *Flower4*s around her neck, adding a *Gift3* of a few gift points to fill her pockets. She smiles uncertainly at me.

"It's all right. Take your time. Can I help?"

The girl nods, though I can tell she is not certain. The motion makes her chain of *Flower4*s bounce, and she giggles nervously as they tickle her skin.

Sensing the young one is just a little overwhelmed, I settle her in with a juice and a few chosen light reads. I step away, leaving her in peace, but stay close by in case she needs anything.

After while, she looks up, and her eyes shine like emeralds in a rock pool.

"Thank you."

Standing up, she walks away from my home. I stand at the door of my portfolio, watching her wander the story-lined streets and humming forum malls. I remember she did not sign my visitor's book, but I relax against the door frame. Next time she visits will do just fine.

You may be wondering what the point of my little fictional story is.

Every day people join Writing.com. Some are looking for exposure for their writing, others for support or to learn, and some are looking for good reading material.

Then there are those who aren't quite sure what they are looking for...or what they've found...when they stumble into the world of WDC.

Some people are overwhelmed by the sheer size and busy-ness of the site, others are enthused and within hours have sussed out the major workings of the community. Some members need to process and dwell on. These members need time to take in all that's on offer before committing, or opening up, to the thriving, busy website.

The Noticing Newbies Newsletter is about recognising our new members, and showcasing their work. But it is also about welcoming our newest ones into the fold.

If you are one of the awesome people who help welcome in these great newbies, I want to offer you some encouragement today. Sometimes our offers of help are rejected. Sometimes we are bashed because of an unhappy experience the person has endured from another member or another website. And on occasion they become a limpet, asking questions all of the time for days on end. There are members who respond willingly and enthusiastically, and those that are wary, or who cannot come back online for a couple of weeks, or longer.

Each person is an individual--their needs are as unique as the background, beliefs, and ideals each one holds. So, too, is every existing Writing.com member different; handling queries and welcomes as their style, time, and experience dictates.

The work you all do is invaluable in growing and sustaining our community as a pleasant and productive place to be. On behalf of every Newbie, and every 'Oldie' also who benefits from your kidness and consideration...
         "thank you!"

And to all of our lovely Newbies, perhaps reading this newsletter for the first time, maybe for the hundredth time *Wink*, I say...
         "Welcome to our family!"

Whether reviewing, posting in a forum, chatting in scroll, or IM'ing, we should all get to know each other, be respectful, not pressurise, and enjoy the fellowship of people who, like ourselves, love to read and write.

Thanks for reading.

Absolutely charming, Pudidat! Loved your images and colorful text. *Wink* Great examples! I remember when I was a newbie (whoa, three years ago! *Shock*) and was so thrilled to learn how to WritingML codes. What fun it is to show your emotions by using these. *Bigsmile* I use them all the time, not that you have not noticed... *Laugh*
Great newsletter!
*Heart* Cubby *Smile*

Thanks, Cubby. I do so love your sense of artistic expression. It is always so...friendly! *Kiss*

Tip~ Save the signature and review formatting you like to use, plus any other common WritingML code you utilise in the pages of your "My Notepad", accessed through the Member Tools drop down menu.

That's a great tip! Hadn't thought of that.. thanks.
