Serving Others

As I write this newsletter, my family is planning to celebrate Memorial Day tomorrow. Memorial Day is traditionally an American holiday although many countries around the world honor their service members, living and fallen, in some fashion at various times throughout the year.

Memorial Day in America was first celebrated in 1868 to commemorate the fallen in the Civil War. The day was recognized as a national holiday one hundred years later and is now celebrated the last Monday in May. My dad capped a 27-year career in the Air Force, while my three siblings and I spent a combined 57 years in our armed forces. I'm proud of the service we and millions of others have offered to our respective countries.

Service!

Service is what each of us as members of Writing.Com does when we help other members here. Whether it is answering a question in a tech forum, reviewing a member's story or poem, writing a how-to article on some aspect of WDC, or taking a newer member under our wing as a Rising Star, WDC thrives on service.

Each of us finds our way through the many features of this site. I discovered early on that making a list of steps required to perform a particularly complex task (at least, it was complex at the time) helped me complete that task more easily. There are literally hundreds of articles and essays that members have written, first for themselves, that others have found helpful. You don't have to be a long-time member to create a useful help article. You just need a passion for some particular aspect of WDC that you wish to understand better and that you clarify that passion in written form so others may understand too.

Of course the first place to look for help is "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window.. Though that guide is currently being revised to reflect the new recent site changes, it's still the best place to look for help. A few other references and forums are listed below:

Take a moment to check out the Ports of older members. They often have folders containing articles explaining some feature of WDC. A caveat: Be sure the new site changes are reflected in these references. *Wink* And if you've written something you think might help others, please let me know. I'll make sure it gets posted for all to see.

Best of luck as you navigate around the site.

Ask & Answer

And from the mailbox about my last Noticing Newbies newsletter, "Are You Called?Open in new Window. }.

From TopMilenko Author Icon: I usually enjoy these news letters. Thank you for taking the time to write it... But my experience is that it would be easier for two men to wear the same space suit than for two writers to create anything. Looking back on the list of good books with two authors... Short list no?

Indeed! But, a "good" book is in the eye of the reader. I am currently enjoying the Left Behind series co-written by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. There may be others, but you're right--they are on a short list.
