Try Everything At Least Once

Short stories are the perfect medium to try out a little bit of many different things.

What's on your writer's bucket list?

Short stories are rumored to be those stories that are at or below 7,500 words. According to Edgar Allan Poe, a short story is one that you can comfortably read in one sitting. Here on Writing.Com, short stories of many lengths are accepted by many contests. Those contest prompts help you to dig deep into many different variations of exploratory writing, while still doing other things with your day.

In today's highlights, I chose short stories that were submitted to "The Writer's CrampOpen in new Window. for different prompts. One was to write only dialogue, another to leave out the letter e. There are also prompts where certain words have to be inserted into your story while the plot has to hold up.

The Writers' Cramp happens daily here on Writing.Com. You can enter a short story up to 1,000 words or a poem of up to 40 lines. The beauty is that the judges change daily too, so the prompts don't get boring. There is always something new to discover. You should put the forum for the Writers' Cramp on your favorites so that you can check out each new prompt and decide if it gets your creative juices going toward fulfilling some writerly task that you always wanted to attempt.

Best thing: the turn around is fast, when you win the prizes are neat, and you can slowly fill up your portfolio with a large number of varied writing.

Ask & Answer

For my last Short Story newsletter "For sale: Baby shoes, Never worn.Open in new Window., I got the following replies:

Quick-Quill Author Icon wrote: Great NL!!! I think the idea is: If you condensed your novel to 6 words what would it be? If you can't you may want to make some changes. This is the premise or theme of your book. Mine might say, Muslim terrorist, thwarts cell, saves friends. What would you say my novel is going to be about?

I'd say it's going to have some action adventure and friendship in it.

brom21 Author Icon wrote: I guess this was one of the first flash fiction stories ever written. It reminded me of poetry with its brevity. It leaves you thinking and at a loss in a good way. It relies more in the reader’s part. I did not know of this story before. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for reading and commenting. Yes, this super short story has quite the history.
