For the past few months I've been searching for a good book which will teach me how to create riddles in English. While I speak and write in the said language, riddles and puzzles are harder to come up with in order to make them understandable. Those I've found and read weren't easy to write or understand. So how do I learn something I can hardly interpret? I gave up. The riddles intrigued me so much that I couldn't let go and so I needed up searching some more. Finding them was easy, deciphering them, not so much, and creating one on my own looked impossible!
Few books contain riddles which you get to decipher alongside the main character. It's almost like a treasure hunt, only, not in every case do you uncover gold or precious stones. Sometimes, it shows you the ugly truth of a life wasted. Other times, just a sad life cut too short. Whatever the outcome, the search to uncover the truth is the most important thing.
The few mystery books containing riddles made it more fun to read. I'd even write them down so I can understand how it created a puzzle for the reader, which is revealed throughout the story. It made sense, but I was far from creating my own. And then it hit me. It wasn't like a hammer on a nail; more like a gentle wind, and it gave me that 'duh' moment. Poetry!
A lot of us writers aren't good poets or aren't poets at all and while you may wonder what poetry and mystery have in common, the answer is the same. It's like a woman's heart, full of secrets, which are unveiled only if and when necessary. 
Naturally, I'm curious. Do you ever incorporate poetry into your writing, especially riddles? How do you come up with it?
