How often do you come up with new ideas which come to fruition?
At times it's not easy to come up with a unique idea, but you always strive to achieve that outcome. You look through other contests and activities, trying to rake your brain for something new, or just different. When an idea strikes it comes so naturally that you don't worry about the details too much. They come eventually. Problem is, what if you're the only one who gets it, understands it, and would love to participate in it?
Sometimes, the idea is a bust. Even though it's a big community, not many seem interested in it, or don't have time to enter it. Or, forget about it. There's always so much going on around here, it can be overwhelming. Don't be disappointed when something like that happens. You've got to keep an open mind when it comes to contests. Don't discard the entire creation due to lack of entries. It might be the wrong time - WdC has its annual and regular contests going on all the time. It may take some time for people to get used to the idea. And if you really see that you don't get many participants, change things up a bit. Ask what you could do differently to improve it.
When you decide you're ready to run a contest/activity, these are the items you should consider:
Is it appealing? While signatures add a certain flair to activities, it isn't a necessity to have them. The look of your creation matters more. Colors, the use of emoticons, space between the rules and prizes for people to distinguish them better. Not many like to sift through paragraphs just to figure out what the requirements are.
Is it easy to understand? This is really important. If people get confused too much, more likely than not, they'll ignore it, without even bothering to ask a question to get more clarification.
Are the rules clear? Rules should be simple and straight to the point. What to do and what not to do is something people want to know before they take on a challenge. Yes, there a times when people ignore the rules completely, because they didn't bother reading them, but that seldom happens.
Will you have the time necessary to run it? This is a tricky one. We don't know what tomorrow brings and when you're running a contest or activity for an entire month, who's to say that something unexpected won't come up. You have to take a risk with it. And if something does happen and your plans change, find someone reliable who'll continue in your stead.
How could you improve it? If you really see that your project isn't doing well, ask yourself what the problem might be, but also ask others. This is a writing website with tons of help and people who are willing to help and give advice. Don't ever shy away from it. Not every project will be perfect right from the start. There are always adjustments to be made. Listen to what people say and use that to improve things.
All the above mentioned are important and play a role in your project. However, if you're not dedicated enough, the outcome will be the same.
'til next time!
