Persona Poems
Many readers make the mistake of thinking that when a poet writes in first person, the poem must be written in truth, and that the narrator is the same person as the poet.
This assumption, of course, is not true. The great thing about poetry is that we can lie and no one will never know! Or, we can tell the truth and pass it off as lies. Poets are experts at deception!
Want to make sure your readers know your poem is not true? Try writing a persona poem. A persona poem is a type of poetry where the poet writes from the point of view of another character, separate from the poet. Often, the speaker is a famous person, historical, or literary character, but it doesn't have to be.
Russian poet Andrey Voznesensky wrote a persona poem called "I am Goya," which was published in 1955. In it, Voznesenky, a well-known poet in his time, wrote from the point of view of Francisco Goya, a famous Spanish painter who had lived some 100 years before Voznesenky, and whom Voznesensky had idolized since he was a child. The poem is very obviously from the point of view of Goya, not Voznesenky. The title "I am Goya" gives the reader the first hint! The entire poem is actually a metaphor for war, a theme that both Voznesenky and Goya explored in their creative works.
The next time you're bored with poetry, why not try to write from the point of view of your favorite literary character, a historical figure, or someone you admire? It can be a great exercise to get your creative juices flowing. |
