Blood, Bugs and Burials

It's the month for horror and scary! With horror contests listed all over the site, what elements do you find most interesting to write about? Do you use rising action and foreshadowing to slowly scare your reader or are you more the slash and gash type that splatters your reader with copious amounts of blood? How do you tread the fine line between scaring your reader and turning them away from your story?

Whichever your methods, remember to use your editing skills before turning in your freaky gem. Check for grammar and punctuation, and most of all, if there was a prompt - make sure you included the prompt! So many entries in contests are disqualified because of tiny things like a missed word count or a bad item post. Don't let something minor like that put you out of the running for an awesome prize. Take five minutes and double check your post.

Join in the scary fun around the site! If you're prepping for NaNoWriMo, it's a great tune-up for your muse, if you love the icky, it's great fun to see who you can scare. Write on! *Ghost*

This month's question: What gothic / horror / scary element makes you most squeamish?
How do you use that in your writing?

Answer below *Down* Editors love feedback! *Heart*

I supply an acronym; you make up what it stands for. My favorite entries win gift points!
#921363 by Davy Kraken Author IconMail Icon

Excerpt: Welcome to ACRO*BATICS! As you may know, an acronym is a sequence of letters formed from the initial letters of a group of words. For example, in the case of a SWAT team, SWAT stands for Special Weapons And Tactics. In this game, however, you work in the opposite direction: I will provide a series of letters that will serve as an acronym, and your mission is to offer the most creative answer to the question of what that acronym represents.

A Romance Contest - winners announced Open in new Window. (13+)
A short story contest for the Seasons of Romance: August = Winter
#1892844 by Osirantinous Author IconMail Icon

Prompts: I think for this round it won't be specific prompts, but more an idea of what fall brings. After a long summer what have we to look forward too? Hay rides and Apple cider. The crisp air that tells us that winter is around the corner. The beautiful hues that only fall brings. Students heading off to college, are they leaving behind a summer love or high school girlfriend/boyfriend. Will it survive the separation?

Leaves begin to change color, the air becomes clear and crisp, romantic, sultry nights are quickly becoming memories. Does he or she begin to look at their summer love with a different perspective? Or does the change of season signal a romance that is only now beginning an era of longevity?

Prompt: Nothing creates unease more than the unknown. I can think of no better tool for a writer. For this round, tell me a tale of the mysterious, unknown, or just strange. Use the visuals for inspiration, if you like. I do not care as long as your piece follows the round's theme.

Welcome to the Halloween Teen Party! *Delight* Here you can have fun and socialise with the "WDC Teens Corner Open in new Window. and fundraise for them. As teens, it can be a struggle to raise funds on WDC. We often can't buy GPs or Memberships with real money and it can be a struggle to review enough to earn enough through reviews. Exams are stressful things! Also, wouldn't it be awesome to have a "Teen" Merit Badge?
