First things first ............
Speaking of birthdays, my wonderful big sister turned 60 last month, and we got to celebrate her birthday with her when she came to visit us in Illinois. She lives in Paradise, also known as Southern California, in a beautiful little beach community. While her house is not on the beach, it is across the street and she can see the ocean from her front porch. We love to visit her whenever we can, especially during the Midwest winters! Not so much in the summer though because it is crowded there, and hot, and she has no AC in her lovely beach cottage.
She wanted us to come to CA for her big birthday bash, of course, but we were not eager to do so. We had already taken precious time off work for our move, and did not want to take more time off to travel to CA (not to mention the expense). But she is not one who is easy to say no to, and I knew if we were going to decline the trip out to SoCal for her birthday, I'd have to come up with a spectacular idea for a plan that would be even better than our coming out to her. And I had to convince her of the plan. So I started planting seeds for a great idea I had early in 2014 ...
Since she was turning 60, I told her she should do something special for her birthday - not just her usual big birthday bash, like she did when she turned 50, but something bigger, more memorable, and special, like she is! So I suggested she might like to travel TO see loved ones, visit with them for a week or weekend, and let them throw her a birthday party - so she could have more than one (girl loves her a party!). That way she could celebrate her birthday all over the country, several times, and extend her birthday beyond the one day. And voila - she was sold on the idea and we no longer had to make plans to go to SoCal in August!
Once I gave her the idea she took it from there. In June she came up with the idea for the "60 Days of 60" birthday tour, had a logo created for it, made a Facebook event page for it, and started to make her travel plans. During her 60 Day Birthday Bash, she visited good friends in Utah for a couple of weeks, family in Vegas for a weekend, another trip to Utah for a retreat, saw her daughter from CT for a week, and spent a week with us in IL (we paid for her plane ticket, which turned out to be much cheaper for us than going out there, in more ways than one, so it was a win-win all around!). In between her travels she visited friends closer to home, had friends come to see her, and threw herself a giant birthday bash at a friend's house for her actual birthday. ] And at each of her tour stops, there was another party for her - she was thrilled! Instead of just getting a day, a weekend, a week, or even a month to be all about her, she got 60 days and multiple parties. She was in Leo heaven!!
While she was with us in IL, my birthday happened, and I wondered if we would get to take a 5 minute breather to celebrate my big day - and we did, of course. We had birthday pedis together, and went out to dinner. But it was only a slight pause, and then it was back to being all about her. As it should be.
Oh - and she loved our new house, especially her room, which she now believes is her very own room, and NOT our guest room (so she says we have to ask permission if we want to have other guests stay there - which we said of course we would do but of course we won't - 60 days is over! haha)! She had fun with our friends, and celebrated her birthday in great Midwestern style, complete with a pontoon boatride on a nearby lake, BBQ, and fireflies!
And the best part is - she did not meet any of our new neighbors!

Now for a few comments about my last newsletter "Comedy Newsletter (August 6, 2014)" about our new neighbors:
From Quick-Quill
I am LOL! I have a story you may or may not feel right to print, but our friends of color laughed at it, We aren't afraid to share. Back in the 50's my dad's cousins had a problem with a raccoon family that took up residence in the tree in their backyard. After doing all they could to get the family to move they called the police to get some direction on a public organization to remove the animal family.
My cousin's conversation went like this, "Sir, we have a problem. A coon family has taken up residence in our back yard. We've done everything we can to get them to move on but they had resisted. Do you know anyone we can call to make this happen?"
"Sir, we'll send someone right over."
"Thank you."
About 20 minutes later a cop car pulled up and 2 black police officers got out. My cousin was mortified. He met them at the front gate. "I think there has been a mistake."
"No Sir we'll take care of it and have them gone in no time."
Unwilling to argue the matter he led the policemen to the backyard and showed them the family of raccoons in the tree. The police just doubled over and laughed. They called for the a trapper to come and get the animals but left laughing which is all my cousin hoped for. Its just one of those family stories.
Oh dear!

Hi Sophy! Well, at least you've met your non-human neighbors. You may be better off that way, who knows? Not much wildlife where I live, but there are lizards, which I never had in the US. I don't know any of my neighbors either. I like it that way.
~ Laura
As long as there are not scorpions, rattlesnakes, or black widow spiders, I consider myself lucky!

LOL, Sophy, you are always a treat to read. I love your style and humor. Also, I sell furniture too and would love to be your neighbor
Awww thanks Billy! And too bad you are just telling me NOW that you sell furniture, since our last piece was just delivered ...

Speaking of meeting new neighbors . . . we had a helper last month. My daughter came into the house and said "Mom, there's a dog outside!" I opened the door, and this big, panting yellow lab came charging inside. She was obviously very hot. We gave her a dish of water, which she proceeded to knock all over the kitchen floor. So I told my son to let her out back. He did . . . and she immediately jumped in the pool! Okaaaay . . . you're definitely not coming back in the house! She knocked over the water every time my son refilled it for her. Silly dog.
I should point out that while this was happening, we were anxiously awaiting the arrival of our foreign exchange student!
So I posted a message on our neighborhood listserv, with our address and phone number. I got a call about half an hour later. New neighbors were out, frantically looking for their dog. He was their next door neighbor, and was coming over to get her. She'd been in and out of the pool 4 or 5 times at this point. Thank goodness we'd just had a new, proper sized pool filter installed, because there was a layer of dog hair floating across the top by the time she was done.
A few days later, 2 teen girls came to the door with a thank you card and Starbucks gift card. So sweet! There are teenage girls in the neighborhood now! So we have Sandy (the dog) to thank for meeting our neighbors around the corner!
I love that story - and I love labs! And yes, labs love to swim - we can't keep her out of the water. I suspect that's why they knock their water dishes over, trying to make a puddle to swim in!

lol @ Mosaic Channel....We have tons of animals in our neighborhood...a herd of deer that eat the landscaping, raccoons that invade the garage, and opposums that lurk around the trash cans in the evening, waiting to hiss and scare the bejeebus out of you. On top of that, a random skunk comes through and sprays any housepet within the vicinity. If there's no pets to spray, the underside of someone's vehicle will do. But we love it! Thanks for the fun newsletter
Yeah, I liked Mosaic Channel myself, hahaha! Thanks for the compliment. So, where do you live? Inside of a national park somewhere? We have the sake critters as you do, and even a woodchuck here and there, but I am not used to seeing them in my yard. Sadly we see them more often on the side of the road ...
From River
The building I am living in has twenty apartments, my neighbours are interesting to say the least. Wildlife... many birds, sweet little humming birds, and not so sweet skunks. The skunks are quite tame though, they come peek in my patio doors at the cat. I'm considering moving across town, my neighbours there will mostly be dead as it is beside a cemetery. Well, they should be quieter than the neighbours I have now. And I can trade in the skunks for white-tailed deer.
Sounds like a good trade, haha!
From Elle - on hiatus
New Zealand doesn't have a lot of 'wildlife', and I see very little of it living in Auckland, our largest city. We do have an awful lot of birds though, and they're glorious. I love hearing the ruru (our native owl, also known as a morepork) at night - if you mimic its call, it will come closer. In the daytime there is a multitude of tui, kereru (wood pigeons) and fantails. As a photographer I am always striving to capture one with my lens.

Oh it sounds so wonderful - I love birdsong! Much better than yappy neighbor dogs, that's for sure!!
From brom21
When you mentioned how your neighbor stared at you, it makes me think of this funny situation when my sister and brother in law moved into a new home. Yah know those punching dummies that only have a torso and a head?-well my brother in law Arlen put a hat on one and put it so it looked as though it was staring at the neighbors over the wall. IT was so funny! Imagine a dude spying you out every moment of the day. Man that gag is still funny to me this time. Anyway, I just wanted share. Good luck with your future home adventures!
Thanks so much!
That's all for this month - see you next time! ~ Sophurky |
