Everyone has had trouble coming up with inspiration for a story at one time or another and the same is true for creating a contest or activity. In these instances, I love to take a trip and see what inspires me.
Now, I’m not saying a cross-country road trip is necessary to gather inspiration. Sometimes it’s just a walk down the street or through the woods. I like to take in my surroundings, not just the sights but also the smells, sounds and how things feel. This leads into a better understanding of your inspiration.
All of this sounds great for writing, but how does it apply to a contest or activity?
Contests and activities are created from an idea and an idea can come from many different sources. Say you are walking down the street and see a crack in the pavement with a bit of grass poking through. That could potentially inspire a contest or contest prompt about cities after humanity.
Activities are more difficult to come up with inspiration for, but it can be done just the same way. "King's Landing updating " is a prime example of drawing inspiration and creating a brand new activity.
When on this trip, there are a few things you should consider:
Take in the surroundings. The smell and physical sensations are just as important inspiration as the sights.
Keep a notebook or cell phone to jot down notes in.
Take your time. You don’t want to rush inspiration or it could seem forced.
Let the ideas sit for a while before acting on them.
Even the tiniest detail can lead to a large idea.
Anything can be inspiration. Don’t discount anything that catches your attention.
The next time you’re looking for inspiration, take a trip and see what you can find to inspire you in your endeavors.

My question for you this time: What inspires you when writing a contest entry or creating a new contest/acitivty?
Question from before: What attracts you to a contest? The visuals, the genre, the type of writing accepted, etc?
Quick-Quill replied: My answer is "All of the above" My first interest is the title of the contest. It's what draws me to click on it. The next is what is the Genre and then, is there a prompt that intrigues me. I don't like contests with under a 1000 word limits. I love to expound. I'd rather see min of 500 max 2000.
Elfin Dragon-finally published said: What attract me to a contest is often the prompts first and then the genre. I came to WDC because I love writing and I write both poetry and stories. Once I found how many contests are run I decided to jump out of my little box of just one type of genre and broaden my horizons a bit. I figured if I could at least write one story that's out of my genre it might help me be a better writer in my own. And I'm finding out that it is and I'm enjoying myself. So if I see a prompt that interests me and I can at least start thinking of an idea for it, then I enter the contest. Once in a rare while I might get in over my head, but I can at least say I tried.
Jellyfish responded: The main thing that attracts me to a contest is the topic/genre - this is the first thing I would look at. If the theme is something that I am just not interested in writing about - for example erotica or history then I wouldn't enter it. A good prize would encourage me to enter, but would not be mandatory. It helps if the page looks visually appealing but there are other factors which would encourage me to enter more so
