First of all, let me congratulate all the Quill honorable mentions, finalists, and, of course, winners! Great job, guys. The "Invalid Item" was quite a success. Andrew and many other members of this site who volunteered have truly outdone themselves. I'm sure everyone is looking forward to the next year to see new writing, contests, activities, and groups. Amazing! So much work goes into it, yet they make it look so easy. And I wouldn't be me if I didn't say how proud I am of "P.E.N.C.I.L." and their achievement! Amazing members doing amazing reviews. What more could one ask for?
But, since we're on the subject of awards, recently, a certain someone said that the incentives do play a big role when entering contests. Many don't care what the rewards are for winning, but when you constantly write and enter different contests, yet don't win in the end, it makes you feel as if it were for nothing. Especially, if there aren't any reviews coming your way either.
There are contests and activities where the incentives are amazing, but we become lazy and don't keep up with what is needed from us. Generally, we blame it on the lack of advertizement or some such thing. The judges aren't fair or the winners and those who run contests are close friends so, automatically, it is assumed that there's a game of favoritism.
Aside from the fact that contest planning and running takes time, it also requires funds to keep them going. If it weren't for people donating and those who run activities willing to share those earning with groups who have contests, things would look pretty bleak sometimes. When funds are running low, the awards have to be smaller in order to keep such items running.
Still, those who enter do like to see at least a small token of appreciation for their time taken to write a poem or story. A good balance can always be created with this. If the funds are low, let those who enter know about it. Some might offer help, while others will understand the struggle to collect those funds. And perhaps, sending out 500 GPs per entry isn't so bad as a thank you. There just may be more entrants for the next round.
Keep an open mind and be willing to listen to other people's opinions before you decide to disregard them. They might help you in more ways than one.
'til next time!
~ Gaby

Here's the feedback from my previous "Contests & Activities Newsletter (February 5, 2014)" :

Well said, Miss Gaby . I know full well how much we want to support all the activities, and how often we get pulled into ten different directions. Been there; done that. Good words to survive by!
Thanks, Jace! I just wish I could follow my own advice sometimes.

Wait, Gaby, YOU of all people are telling others to pace themselves? Pot, meet kettle!
What can I say? Just don't spread the word!
