"Love is..." Creating Metaphors About Love
"Roses are red, violets are blue..." but "My love is like a red, red rose." Which one puts a better picture in your head? Which one sounds more sincere and less cliche? Like many poems, love poetry has a way of sounding cheesy when it's not grounded in metaphors and similes.
Simile: a comparison using "like" or "as" such as in "my love is like a red, rose rose" in the famous poem by Robert Burns.
Metaphor: a comparison not using "like" or "as" such as in "Love is a Battlefield," a song by Pat Benatar.
The real trick is to find a metaphor that is unique and conveys exactly what you mean. Poets do not have an easy job! If you're stuck when trying to come up with metaphors, try starting with the words "Love is..." and brainstorming a list. There's no such thing as something too crazy during this brainstorming!
For example, I came up with:
Love is the roaring fireplace in the winter.
Love is your homemade pizza dough.
Love is a dance to silent music.
Now, take your best idea and run with it. You may want to begin your poem with "Love is..." and extend your metaphor throughout the entire poem. (See my Editor's Picks for a poem that does just that.)
Coming up with unique metaphors can be one of the toughest parts about writing poetry, and love can be a pretty tricky thing to express in words anyway, so I encourage you to use this exercise to strengthen your love poetry.
