Letter from the editor

"And none will hear the postman's knock without a quickening of the heart.
For who can bear to feel himself forgotten?" ~ W.H. Auden

What makes you happy? Money? Success? Family get-togethers? How about exotic vacations?

What if I were to ask who makes you happy? Is there someone in particular who radically impacted your life or inspires you to be a better person? When I think about the most influential people in my life, my heart practically bursts with happiness and love for them, but do they know that? Do they know the depth of my feelings for them? I'm sad to say not all of them do, and that is a very sad thing.

How would you feel if your daughter called (or wrote a letter) to tell you how you've positively influenced her life? Would you be able to maintain composure if your best friend expressed how much he loves you and why? It would be an incredibly powerful moment, and it would deepen an already meaningful relationship.

On January 8 I saw a beautiful video by SoulPancake about this very subject, and it moved me to tears. It also prompted me to write letters to my friends and loved ones--things like, "Thank you for making me laugh. Thank you for being my strength when I didn't have any, and thank you for giving me what I needed when I had nothing left to give." Writing the letters fills me with such gratitude, joy, and love. It's doing me good to write them, just as it's doing my friends and loved ones good to receive them.

Here's my challenge to you this month: write one letter per week for the next four weeks. Maybe you'd like to thank that coworker who's always willing to pick up a shift for you when you're in a pinch, or your fourth grade teacher who read the class a book each week, instilling in you a love of the written word. Perhaps you've never told your husband exactly how you feel about him, or your son, or daughter, or stepfather. Pick four people and write them a letter, then send it. If you'd like, create a copy of the letter as a static item and send me the link. I'll share them in next month's Spiritual Newsletter.

Until then, thank you for reading, and be sure to check out the SoulPancake video below. I promise, you won't regret it.

Editor's Picks

Sometimes I get feedback from people who are upset when I feature work by members who haven't been active in months or years. Some of the authors of this week's featured selections haven't been on the site for a while, and one recently passed away, but this fact doesn't make their work any less relevant. I hope you enjoy their insights as much as I did. Thank you, and have a great week!

Ask & Answer

The following is in response to "God Bless Us, EveryoneOpen in new Window.

Quick-Quill Author IconMail Icon says, "What a change this Christmas. My father is failing fast and I mean on the slippery slope to bedridden. They came to town for a wedding and did not leave. They are now ensconced in my living room (their bedroom), but due to the fact I have only a powder room on the main floor and Dad is too weak to climb one or two steps we have had to find them an apt, and Sat drove 2 hours to their house and packed what they needed for the immediate move and back. They move in Jan 1. I see weeks, maybe a few months ahead and we will no longer have him. Sad to see him in this condition and I wish God would take him quietly in his sleep. How can I be sad at his passing when I know he will be free to run, jump on streets of gold. Meet his parents and daughter who have gone on before. It is with a conflicted heart I wait for the boat that will come to take him across 'Jordan' to his reward. I will not be sad each Christmas that comes, only a contentment he is waiting for me (and my Mom) to get there." Oh, I am so sorry to hear this. I will keep you and yours in my thoughts and prayers. *Heart*
